| When are they going to announce? Does anyone know? |
| The start times are available on each school's website. |
| We heard about ours a few months ago. Wakefield Forest. Starting 10 minutes later. |
| What do you mean "announce" the start times? Just go to your school's web page and it says right there what their hours are. The county doesn't make a big announcement for every school. |
| Oh how I wish they would make middle school start later. |
+180, for each miserable morning |
You can thank current School Board chair Sandy Evans and the morons at SLEEP for that. |
Sandy would have preferred middle schools kept their later (pre-change) start times, but a choice had to be made because taxpayers refuse to foot the bill for more buses and bus drivers. |
| I think the solution should be a county-wide effort to build sidewalks within 1-1.5 miles of every school and remove any buses that cover these perimeters now. Use those eliminated buses and bus drivers to at least put a dent in the costs and move MS start times to the same time as high school. Yes, it would be expensive, but not only would it allow for later start times, but it would create a more walkable Fairfax and hopefully promote healthier lifestyles all around. Again, taxes would have to go up, but it would be worth it. |
Don't count on it happening too quickly. They are filling in sidewalks on Kirby/Idlewood from Rte 7 to Chetsrbrook Road and down Chesterbrook and it is going to take 6 years once they start. They decided serval years ago and it has yet to start. Kids not even born yet will still be waiting for them to be built so they can walk to their elementary school even for 6th grade. I don't know why it take so long. Or if it because it is VDOT and therefore out of the county's hands. |
Actually, Sandy/SLEEP wanted to make the elementary kids go first, but this was roundly rejected as moronic. The compromise was to make middle school kids go first, resulting in kids who need more sleep getting far less than recommended. |
Actually the option they chose needed more buses and cost more - not sure what reasoning they had... Write to Karen Garza and the school board! |
Actually, in Loudoun where I live (and in Henrico County in Richmond where I am from) this is how it's done and it's fine. My kids tardy bell rings at 7:50am. They wake at 7:00, bus comes at 7:28. It actually works really well. MS bus comes at 8, HS bus comes at 8:30. Pretty ideal to me. |
I am in awe. My elementary school kids' bus comes at 8:45 and I wake them up at 7:45 and still rush them to get them out the door! They are so pokey in the morning.

Seems like it turned out FCPS had plenty of money in the budget after all, even after the usual doomsday predictions. Why don't they use some of their surplus for buses and drivers? |
