DH won't change work schedule for vacation - VENT

Anonymous
We had family vacation planned for two weeks from now, but younger son's asthma doctor had to move his appointment to that week. Fortunately, moving everything to three weeks from now is basically zero cost. Problem is DH- boss is supposed to be gone that same week and wants DH to run the office while he is away. I think DH should tell his boss he can't run the office that week, but DH doesn't want to. So, probably no vacation at all for us... I don't understand why DH doesn't prioritize family over work. End vent.

You need to pick a different week that doesn't conflict with other's pre planned vacation schedules. Why don't you shift the appointment back and stick to your original vacation schedule?

Did he already tell his boss he was going to run the office that week? If so, I agree with him that it would be bad form to back out now if the reason for rescheduling is an asthma doctor appointment.

Unless it's an absolute emergency, why does everything revolve around this one appointment? Unless your child is having a very serious immediate-attention-needed, it seems like moving the appointment would be less of a hassle than having your husband be put in a terrible position at work. Especially if he's known he would have to cover this week because work is in a bind. He is the breadwinner I presume? So it's kind of important he stay in his boss's good graces so he can support your family?

He probably considers it a week of vacation also when the boss is gone. I never took vacation the same time as my boss.

Why didn't you tell the doctor that you will be on vacation that week and can't change your appointment? Then you changed the family vacation week without consulting your husband? Sorry, OP--this is on you, not your husband.

OP here. The asthma doctor is a mich-in-demand specialist, and has other availability before February next year.

Sorry, NO other availability...

If your DH already committed to be at work, then that takes precedent over the abrupt changes to your vacation schedule. Most offices cannot accommodate a sudden schedule change like that. When the asthma doctor changed the appointment, the correct response is to say that you aren't available that week and to figure out a different time for the appointment. The asthma doctor doesn't overrule your schedule anymore than you DH can overrule his office schedule.
