| My 5 year old and 3 year old mostly wear dresses. 5 year old is better at sitting appropriately and making sure she is covered, but sometimes not. Today at a performance she was wearing a long dress, but when she shifted around from sitting to standing or sitting with legs crossed, she would flash her underwear. My 3 year old is not great at being careful but we try. My 5 year old will wear bike shorts or litle boy shorts at time, but my 3 year old will not. She has some aversion to shorts. |
| At 5 and 3, I think it's still fine to see underwear as a child sits or stands. If the 5 year-old will wear shorts underneath, even better. The three year-old doesn't really matter. She will learn to sit better and wear shorts within a few years. |
| It's nice if the girls grasp how to avoid showing their undies, but if it happens by accident it's also not a huge deal. A friend who's a college professor says she sees her female students' underwear all the time in the summer when they wear short skirts, b/c they don't always remember to cross the legs. A relative of mine who's in her late twenties routinely doesn't wear underwear and I've unfortunately gotten eyefuls at the pool. So, bottom line, at least they wear undies? |
| Whose 3 year old is potty trained?! |
A lot of 3 year olds! I teach 3 year olds, almost all of My students are potty trained by the Time they get to me. |
| I also don't like my almost 5yo daughter's underwear showing, especially since she's a fan of multiple cartwheels, etc. I've put tumble shorts on her since she's been out of diapers (a couple years). She always wears these under skirts and dresses (or she wears skorts). They are pretty short, so not too hot in the summer. They sell some pretty good quality basic ones at JCrew, so I have a few pairs of those. They go on sale pretty regularly. |
| no bike shorts, no dresses. house rule. |
| If my anectotal observations count, it's about 35 in DCUM land. |
Um, lots of people's? My kid stopped wearing diapers during the day just before she turned three. This was true for many of the kids in her daycare class. |
I hope you're joking. |
My three-year-old has always worn cartwheel shorts or bike shorts under her dresses or skirts, or skorts. Aside from the modesty issues (not something I worry a ton about at three), it's much more comfortable when she's swinging, sliding, and playing in the dirt or sand. I just buy a bunch of shorts in a variety of colors from whoever's having a sale. I also choose skorts over skirts to minimize bulk at the waistband. |
| What about boys? My boys are 6 and 3 and are skinny-minnies. Their shorts and pants slide down so the band of their underwear shows. How bad is this? Should I tighten the elastic adjusters on their pants more tightly, or get them a belt? Or just not worry about it? |
Uh...I think you're in the minority here....my 3.5 year old has been potty trained for over 18 months. |
| I got my girls to wear skorts. |
pretty much every 3 year old I know is potty trained. At my kids preschool, my DD was one of the last ones to be fully trained and she just turned 3. |
