Dear MCPS Community,

Thank you to the many families who have provided consent for their children to receive free COVID-19 testing at their schools. Testing is an important tool to help keep schools open and students and staff safe. We need families at all levels to “Say Yes to the Test.” The more families that “Say Yes,” the more effective our testing program will be. The testing will help identify more cases and reduce the number of students in quarantine.

One form allows you to opt in, or give permission, for your child to participate. Two types of tests are available and they are fast, safe and painless. A cotton swab is used on the front part of the nose. The tests are:

Weekly screening tests for random samples of students with no COVID-19 symptoms. Currently scheduled to be in all elementary and middle schools by the end of the week

Rapid tests for students with COVID-19 symptoms. These tests are given while students are in school. Currently in all schools

The consent form is available in multiple languages and can be filled out online or schools can provide paper copies for families.

The tests are an important part of MCPS' plan to keep students learning in school, five days a week, and to keep our community safe. Learn more about what MCPS is doing and how everyone can do their part.

Did you want them to test all 160,000? What’s an accurate sample to you?

Yes, I would like all 160K tested. They got federal funding to do it.

Actually there is not enough funds to continually test every student—they would run out of money in a few weeks. The Biden administration did not provide enough funding for public schools to do what you are proposing. Google it. There was a recent segment on NPR that explains the test funding situation.

then they need to put funds towards getting as many families to sign on as possible. Our PTA didn't want to touch it because the PTA president was afraid of quarantine (yes, privileged much). Also, actually hire a biostatistican who knows how to take a cluster randomized sample.

Wait...I thought that the people that wanted quarantine/remote/virtual were the privileged ones? Bc they had the means and flexible work arrangements to make it work.

The people that can't quarantine are the non-privileged, those who can't take time off from work or work from home?

I'm confused now...who has the privilege?

Hmm, people with a compromised immune system like having a cancer patient in the family?

Their answer is those folks deserved cancer and deserve to die but that if they take the vaccine, the vaccine will save them. Too bad that's not true given Colin Powell, who probably gets the best military health care in the VIP section, just died of covid complications related to health issues.

But Margery smelkinson, phd at the nih assured us this wouldn’t happen.

/s obviously, for the followers of her who don’t understand life

Nearly all experts agree everyone will eventually be exposed to COVID. I don't understand what you think you're accomplishing by keeping masking/distancing/quarantines after people have been vaccinated.

The idea is to avoid a quick and massive surge in cases. By slowing down the process of everybody getting covid everyone gets a bed in ICU if needed.

MoCo is overwhelmingly vaccinated. The vaccines aren’t perfect, but they’re very, very good at preventing hospitalization.

Some vaxxed folks may still get very sick or worse. I don’t see why it is a big deal that we all wear a mask for another year or so.

I wish people like you would be more public and transparent about your endgame. I think there are a lot of people that could be convnced to mask a little longer. But they're going to react very differently when you explain that "a little longer" means "another year or so."

The endgame is when covid is no longer a threat. You’ll know it and everyone will know when it’s not a threat. Not point in convincing any antimasker at this stage when it’s clearly still a threat. Such waste of time.

It's always going to be a threat, particularly to people that haven't had it yet. Just less of a threat to vaccinated people.

Clearly you have no endgame. I guess that's fine, but don't expect anyone to wait until you feel better.

This isn't true that the most serious cases are only amongst senior citizens. They have had a higher death rate, but many are due to group living situation like assisted living and nursing homes that didn't take enough precautions early on. If you ever had a loved one in a facility you'd know. They use the same mop water in every room and don't change it out. Same protective gear and at best only change gloves. When they get dementia, generally they sit them all close together for many hours in the same room vs. keeping them separated so they can just have one person watching all of them (if you are lucky one person is watching them). They also have 2-4 residents per room.

Not true at all and why are we seeing cases in the HS and MS where most have been vaccinated?

1. Many of the cases in MS and HS may be the remaining kids who are unvaccinated.
2. HS and MS students are gross. They do a great job wearing masks in class, and then as soon as they are in the halls or at lunch the masks are down and they are drinking from the same soda bottles or throwing arms around each other and laughing in each others' faces.

It is good thing that schools are holding up well in spite of all that.

If we have a high vaccine rate for over age 12, then you saying that all those kid are unvaccinated is not true. And, this is why MCPS should have implemented social distancing as your kids cannot act responsibly and don't have parents who teach them to be responsible.

Majority of MS and HS kids who are of age are vaccinated. These vaccines help but they aren't perfect.
