Still a lot of vacancies up.....

So many IA's and SPED teacher positions not filled.

Why isn't Gatehouse sending people to fill some of the more critical roles? Oh right, probably because they just sit there and cross their arms and do nothing. Bunch of losers, they are.

I wonder how some schools SPED departments are even functioning? These truly are critical positions-they are probably taking advantage of the IA's they have....who will then up and leave next year. It's a bad cycle.

FCPS doesn't care otherwise they would get rid of some of their overhead positions and use the funding for sped, but they are perfectly happy in their gatehouse offices just sitting on their butts. I'm beginning to wonder what is the primary function of FCPS, it doesn't seem to be education and their primary focus should be students first and teachers a very close second but I fear that is not the case.

Does HR run data on resignations and if so are there any flags when one school has too many in one year or over the course of several years? If so, is there anything done to see what is causing the resignations or nobody cares?

I think if admin isn’t outright abusive to staff nothing is done. I’m sure they know the turnover rates for each school but that’s not public. I get the feeling admin/central office take up for each other and protect each other. Every month they share the resignations county wide for the previous month. The one for august should come out today at the school board meeting.

+1. It's a jobs program for education degrees and other white collar positions (and by that I don't mean hard working teachers). I don't know how you would even begin to go about dismantling the insane bureaucracy, but it sure would help. So many fluffy positions at Gatehouse and even in schools (the teachers whose jobs it is not to teach but to tell all the other teachers how to teach, for example).

Most of the people in these positions are teachers that were over being in the classroom. If you made these employees go back half of them would quit.

+1. Central Office definitely has this information. It should be made public but it won't.

There was another posting at one point called How many teachers are leaving your school? Our school had huge turnover last year. I was hoping that it would raise some red flags and someone would have to be held accountable although it appears that losing 30 staff members is business as usual in FCPS.

Perfect. Use their salaries to pay SPED teachers more.

I don’t know if it’s true but I have heard that admin isn’t even evaluated on turnover.

Anonymous wrote:I left education and started a new job. I do my best to not spread negativity about the profession, but when I told my new coworkers it was immediately “is it true the kids are crazy?” And “you’re so brave”. The reputation about teaching is spreading so yeah it’s going to be hard to fill positions. After what happened in Newport News and now in Texas with the principal losing her eye a lot of people are very hesitant.

This-I left teaching and my family and friends were like thank goodness you got out. I watched IA's get hurt and admin act annoyed-I had admin ask my IA's and myself what we wanted them to do as a child destroyed rooms and kicked and scratched/screamed for sometimes 30 mins straight. It's becoming unsafe-I can't speak for MS and HS but elementary schools are understaffed. And you might get a sub one day but in these conditions most aren't coming back. It's sad for the kids who are there and ready to learn. And honestly I wouldn't want to be admin because the truth is there is not much they can do....but I will tell you teachers do not get paid enough to deal with that level of chaos when they are still responsible for the safety and education of many other students. So admin-take them out-make parents come get them but don't shrug and ask what you should do. It is a horrible working and learning environment-day to day survival is not good for teaching or learning.

They need to send the violent kids with the issues to a special school that can meet their needs.

Absolutely. I was assaulted while subbing and when I took the kid to the front office, admin wanted nothing to do with it. They acted as if it was *my* fault. Needless to say, I never went back to that school.

I thought about subbing but never went through with it. I read about the bait and switch and chickened out. It's not worth the $22 or whatever it pays an hour.
