If you are wealthy would you send your kids to a W school over private?

Does not want spoiled kids. Good for him. He is worth like 100 million and is giving it all away to people who need it.

Plenty of spoiled kids go to public school.

Sending your kid to a top private school will not necessarily spoil them.

I don't mind "spoiling" my kid with private school. There's a lot worse things to spoil you kid with.

Wealthy private school parent here. Yep, I admit I spoiled my children with a top notch education. I’m not spoiling them with designer clothes, the newest tech devices or fancy cars. I like to think that I have my priorities straight!

And this is exactly why I send my kid to private school...so they are surrounded by families like yours who prioritize education over material things like cars, clothes, homes, and vacations.

Private school families - prioritizing education

Public school families - Prioritizing ????

Prioritizing education has nothing to do with private or public. People opt of different options due to various reasons.

eh. most private school parents send their kids to private schools because they can, not because the "prioritize" education. Do these rich people think all these public school Asian American parents don't prioritize their kids' education? If they thought private school was the best, they'd scrimp and save to send their kids to private school.

Oh goody, here comes the "Model Minority" bigotry and stereotyping.

This, it’s not like white parents can’t instill discipline into their kids similarly by enrolling them in Kung fu too.

Realize that W schools get less funding by MCPS than schools with high FARMS rates. Class sizes are high, staffing (especially in Special Ed positions) remain vacant, bullying is rampant, and drugs are sold and used on school premises. At Churchill, there’s been high turnover in the administrative leadership.

Sure, if money wasn’t a factor, I would choose private over Churchill. We did move one child to private but we didn’t have the financial resources to move our other child. The quality and positive learning atmosphere is worth the investment for families that can afford it.

Plenty of Asian Americans do just that.

Asian Americans that can afford private school tend to go that way. The y will rarely own luxury cars or a vacation home and send their kids to public.

Most Americans don't own luxury cars or vacation homes. Most people in Montgomery County don't own luxury cars or vacation homes. And stereotyping of Asian-Americans is just as bigoted as stereotyping of any other group. Stop doing it.

There is without question a very strong emphasis on education in the Asian community...I think it's great.

"The Asian community" in the US consists of 22 million people who trace their roots to more than 20 countries in East and Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, each with unique histories, cultures, languages and other characteristics.

The quality of public education has dropped SIGNIFICANTLY since I went to public school. I now have to pay for what my parents got for free and it makes me a bit salty. I don't believe that politicians who put their kids in private have enough skin in the game.

Bush Jr and Sr, Clinton, Obama all sent their kids to public schools at some point. Trump and Biden don't have my respect in this regard.

Obama's kids went to Sidwell.

As did Chelsea Clinton.

Public schools really aren't set up to accommodate Secret Service details and requirements.

Yeah that wasn’t even close to the entire reason.

But it's a big part.

They're also talking about DC schools which we all know are not the best publics for the most part. I wonder if they would have done public if they could have gone in a UMC suburb.

I seriously doubt it. The reality is, people with means usually choose private school.

Or you mean the half the kids in my daughter’s private school class who aren’t white?

If you’re thinking in terms of ROI i.e. that you’re buying some outcome like a college admission or some certain entry level job, you’re not a fit for private schools.

Spoken like a true private family. How dare you OP.

There seems to be a weird hang up about this. We have enough money to easily send kids to private. A friend whose kids went from public to private (and her DH had to get a more intense job to afford this) apparently felt defensive about the switch, enough to accuse me of not sending my kids to private because we were "gaming college admissions." Uh, no. WTF.

Okay but on the former presidents, PP’s point was that their kids had attended public schools at some point — like the Obama kids did in Chicago. I’m sure there were reasons and I don’t know anything about those schools, but these examples were kids who did not attend private all the way, although they did in DC.

Malia and Sasha went to UChicago lab school. That’s not public.
