Private Schools Wokeness Over the Top

Paradox of tolerance.

e) These so-called boundaries exist only in your warped mind.

I can do this all day.

So can I:

a) No, they are not. That's the whole point. If you want to believe otherwise, you are free to do so, but you are in fact, wrong.
b) So what?
c) Not to the exclusive degree that they are of late.
d) Oh yes, they have.
e) Thanks, but I'm the parent.

a) Of course they are. The school year is long. Just because one viewpoint is the focus for a week or two, others are taught during the rest of the time. They might even be compared!
b) The so-called "wokeness" can't be over the top if over 95% of the time, it's not being covered.
c) Exclusive is in the eye of the beholder. Where my kids go to school, they say the affinity groups are plenty inclusive.
d) I'm not making the claim, so the burden of proof is on you.
e) Thankfully, you're not the only parent and the majority doesn't think boundaries are being crossed inappropriately. Just a vocal minority on DCUM making strawman arguments.

b) Because this nonsense is taking up time in the day that could be better spent on educational matters of substance.

I think the issue is that mean, doctrinaire conservatives (or: Russian trolls pretending to be you) are freezing silliness in place by being so mean and doctrinaire.

Some of the stuff that progressive say and do now seems off the mark.

But I can’t engage about the middle ground type of stuff if the people on the other side want to give Ukraine to Russia, sic law enforcement on families dealing with questions about their kids’ gender, or subject student athletes to invasive gender checks.

The foolishness of the people who use ever-more-progressive rules of behavior to lord it over other people is annoying, but the actions of people like DeSantis are terrifying.

Yeah, there have always been some silly people on the far left, but I’m honestly baffled by people who get worked up about “wokeness” just as I was baffled by people who were upset about political correctness. I guess it’s just a way to feel good about proudly and publicly saying that they want to be racist and sexist and repeat silly made up alternative history that leaves out the racism. Why anyone is ok with this is beyond me.

Look -- I am a conservative republican with 3 kids at 2 different privates. Have I seen anything over the top -- no not at all. Some stuff is silly but not outraged about it. This whole idea of over-woke privates is a little nuts. There is some stuff that needs a push back but I have not seen it at our privates.

I was visiting family last week and heard two Republican members of my family discussing how happy they were that they and parents like them had “shut down” a high school biology teacher who was teaching “that evolution stuff” in a public high school. According to them, evolution is no longer being taught in their kids’ public high school biology classes.

I’m a lot more concerned about that than I am about performative virtue signaling.

But it is hypocritical to be pushing all of this and ignore the class aspect.

My kids are young - Kindergarten and first grade so they haven't been exposed to a lot of this yet. But I am worried that there is some indoctrination going on.

There is no indoctrination going on or is it treated as a religion. You sound like FOX news.

DeSantis is doing the right thing by defunding DEI in state universities. Way to go!

He also wants to get rid of AP exams in Florida. Nice job!
Anonymous
Agree most top schools are getting rid of AP and a lot of college won’t accept AP.

Yup, this poster is demonstrating that anti-wokeness really does just come down to cheering for racism.

It will be interesting to see how DeSantis’ national ambitions survive the increasing criticism from the right and the rising discontent in Florida.

You don’t understand racism.

Umm there is no discontent in Florida. Why would there be? More people have moved to Florida than any other state.
Anonymous
There should be some DEI and Social Justice threads through school. Nothing should be spoon fed though... at the end of the day the job of education is hopefully to foment critical thinking and thinking for oneself?

Flat out I don't believe that happened. Maybe they said it. Not true.

I mean, we know what’s going to happen- he’s going to keep doing heinous things to appeal to right-wingers, then Trump will say “look at this Ron guy, Meatball Ron, you can’t pronounce his last name, sounds Mexican to me, he stands like he has to poop all the time” at a debate and his career will be over just like Jeb Bush’s.
