| Saw this on Facebook, Is any admitted family going to this at the library on Wednesday? an all white administrative staff swooping in to foster, cultivate, and create, diversity...WOW.....Not interested in pandering, glad we gave up our seat. |
The director of curriculum (or instruction - I forget her title), is an African American woman. |
Guess you didn't go to the same admitted parents we did that showed a group of racially and cultural diverse families. |
So diverse families gives the staff a pulpit from which to preach diversity? It's condescending to the families, who are diverse to be spoken to about diversity. |
Our Montessori has a diverse staff and a diverse student body. |
It's being presented as a conversation about how parents want to incorporate diversity, but keep on with your hate. |
|
You guys need to go easy on Breakthrough. Parents wanted Montessori, a charter, or options other than their IB. They got a fair to middling lottery draw, Breakthrough is where they end up and they want to make it a success. It's the story of every single charter in its first year.
Let the school open up before you make judgments. "Founding" family of another charter. |
As a woman, if I invite a group that includes women to a conversation about what we value and what we struggle with about being women, does that mean I'm pandering or preaching? Because some might see it as a conversation that acknowledges that we're women. |

"Saw this on Facebook, Is any admitted family going to this at the library on Wednesday? an all white administrative staff swooping in to foster, cultivate, and create, diversity...WOW.....Not interested in pandering, glad we gave up our seat." I'm glad you gave up your seat too. |
So weird that OP is still looking up info about Breakthrough if she gave up her seat. |
*high five!* |
Not that weird. And it's a valid concern, even if she expressed it snidely. There are a lot of DC charters who pay a lot of lip service towards attracting a disadvantaged population... who don't really want that. |
| who gives damn? People want montessori, they lotteried in and got it. the demographics for the under five set are changing dramatically in DC. Especially in a neighborhhood like petworth. Most people choose schools based on proximity and academic offerings. It would be logical that breakthrough would skew white. White parents want an education for their kids too people. |
I get it. Breakthrough makes hay in its Charter application about serving a diverse community but then locates where it knows it will get disproportionate white enrollment, and then apparently does not make much of an effort to create a diverse admin team, and now wants to "celebrate diversity." I can see how that would gall. |
| "I saw it on Facebook" is the new "I don't watch that show, they just had it on at the gym and I glanced over while powerlifting." |
