you act like charter schools just spring up fully formed with no planning or ability to influence who enrolls ...

I'm glad you gave up your seat too.

So weird that OP is still looking up info about Breakthrough if she gave up her seat.

Not that weird. And it's a valid concern, even if she expressed it snidely. There are a lot of DC charters who pay a lot of lip service towards attracting a disadvantaged population... who don't really want that.

I get it. Breakthrough makes hay in its Charter application about serving a diverse community but then locates where it knows it will get disproportionate white enrollment, and then apparently does not make much of an effort to create a diverse admin team, and now wants to "celebrate diversity." I can see how that would gall.

So their admin team is what, three people? And two are white? What's the issue here? What about their board? The families they serve? Their teaching staff?

how signficant an influence can they have? in DC mostly educated parents are into Montessori. Sure breakthrough can host school meet and greets in Wards 7 and 8 but are they providing the transportation for a 4 year old to get across town? Honestly, most AA in DC are probably wary of montessori and most things "child led"-- I like montessori but yes I have certainly encountered black folks who thinks its really strange.

I'm impressed that you know most of the black families in DC, and I love it that you think we all think and feel the same things.

You obviously don't know much of anything. Otherwise it would be crystal to you that charters go where there is a facility.

+1 (the part about the facility, not the insult). They were considering many locations all over town, but the old Bridges space came through soonest and was most suited to serve PK3/PK4.

Not true. Look at the Charter applications. They indicate where they are considering locating. It's ridiculous to think they don't consider the ward. I am positive there are tons of facilities available in ward 7 and 8. Somehow Rocketship finds them, but Breakthrough couldn't.

So sick of diversity.

Rocketship built their facility from scratch. And it is gorgeous.

Did they buy the land for it too? Wow.

BTW, I was checking out the Rocketship application, and they plan to eventually expand to enroll 5000k kids in the District! May never happen, but wow. Anyone know anything about this charter chain?
