As soon as Orlando mass shooting hit news circuit Donald Trump renewed his call to ban Muslim immigration. I know in my gut that it is wrong to target a religion for a hate crime, however just to clarify my understanding I went looking for data...
Found this article: The Math of Mass Shootings Before blaming a religion understand that 7 out of the 129 (I counted based on names) seems to be Muslim. That is 0.05%. What about the religion of the rest? Should we blame the religions? Should we ban immigration from all countries where the shooters' heritage lie? This article presents a lot of facts. Read and draw your own conclusions. Why do we tend to respond to Hitler like rhetoric from Trump/(other hate mongers) when the blame is not directed to our own religion or ethnicity? When would we wake up? |

The other facts that we should pay attention to is out of the 244 guns 39 were obtained illegally. NRA's argument has been that criminals would have guns illegally falls flat with this statistics.
If guns were not so easy to access in US there is a high possibility that roughly 85% of the mass shootings may not have happened. Even if that figure is lowered to 50% is it not worth it? |
Beautiful. Exactly my point. But then the apologists will shout and rant about banning certain groups that is UNLIKE THEM. Why dont they shout about banning European immigrants when Tim Mcveigh or Dylan Roof or UNA bomber or the hundreds of white supremacists commit mass murders here? My point is keep the country open and free. We are not scared and run like headless chicken. Do not ban an entire group, whatever the group maybe, white or christian or muslim, that is irrelevant. Be judicious and not allow an immigrant from any group who has connections with any violent, radical group. Yes increase the wetting process, nothing wrong with it, BUT not an umbrella ban on ANY targeted group. |
| A white guy tried to shoot up a pride march also. He was caught. To me they are both American born gay bigots and maybe steered that way by their religious beliefs or maybe not. |
7/129 is .05, or 5%. Big difference between that and .05% (which is closer to 0 than 5%). |
Intellectual laziness, huh. Just what you deserve. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_terrorism_in_the_United_States |

Ask yourself first and foremost, who are the "we" you're talking about? If you're talking about white Protestants - you know the people who founded this country by wiping out Native Americans and enslaving Africans so they could be free from tyranny (eyeroll) - then its pretty obvious why "we" respond to Hitler-like rhetoric from Trump and other hate mongers...cause the propaganda they spew pumps white Protestants up the Good Guys not to mention the fact that its an easy opinion to embrace... I mean think about it, who wants to bear the burden of thinking objectively as an individual all the time and actually taking time to accurately assess situations and circumstances and causes and effects when it is SO MUCH EASIER to just jump on a bandwagon and join in with others who are all pointing at them - whatever particular group of people happen to be widely despised at the moment - and say its all their fault. The average person's attitude is, "As long as the collective fingers aren't pointed at me who gives a shit about facts?" |
| How about looking up bombings, plane hijackings and beheadings in the past 20 years around the globe and see what those statistics tell you? |
This is very smart post. Obviously if you are intellectually lazy(likely deficient) then it is much easier to point or blame the collective them, whoever that "THEM" is immaterial. Thats the classic demagoguery, blame someone for the problem instead of actually understanding the problem to find solutions. |
http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/06/12/gun-deaths-today-surpass-those-in-our-bloodiest-war/ http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/27/opinion/lessons-from-the-murders-of-tv-journalists-in-the-virginia-shooting.html?smid=fb-share&_r=2 those link gives all the data you want. Be intellectually curious for a change and think and analyze the issues raised. |
You obviously dont realize WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE GLOBE, that the world has all kinds of issues not just islamic terrorism, which is certainly a part, but NOT the full. There are for instance unjust war in Iraq that destabilized an entire region, There is geopolitics involved among global powers(US, Europe,Russia,China,India etc) protecting their own myopic self interests, myriad other issues from drought, civil war etc etc. You are viewing the entire globe's problem with the prism of islam, dont you think so. I am sure you are smarter than that. |
| Nearly 100% of mass shooters are men. Banning men from the U.S. (whether born here or not) seems like the best way to stop the killing. |
| Guessing it was lost on Trump that the shooter was not an immigrant. |
