| I am trying to eat more healthy, but this is mucous consistency grosses me out ... it's like pouring liquefied Elmer's on my cereal. What else can I try? |
| Read up on how much actual almond is in almond milk. It's not much. Having said that, I still enjoy it occasionally. I like it best mixed into smoothies. I like cow milk too, though, so.. |
| I have a milk allergy and I actually like almond milk. If what you're using has a gooey consistency, it probably has thickeners. You can try a different brand that doesn't have thickeners in the ingredients list, or try a different kind of nut milk. None of them are as tasty as actual milk so if that's your quest, give it up. I would be drinking real milk if I could. |
I'm not sure the point is to get almonds out of almond milk. You can always just eat almonds if that's the goal. You can look up the recipe for homemade almond milk and you'll see it is just the water from raw almonds that are soaked for a long time. It's white and milky and works as a milk replacement. That's pretty much the goal of almond milk. |
| I have no allergies and prefer almond milk to cow milk. I hate milk/ never drink it/ only ever use it in cooking, and almond milk works just as well in my recipes that call for cow milk. And I would hate to contribute to the abuse of dairy cows- they suffer and live horrible lives until they are killed. |
I am lactose intolerant and have tried all the "milks". Almond milk is definitely superior. Your are correct that they are probably adding a thickener, because almond milk is actually usually quite runny. The best almond milk is "Pacific" brand from Whole Foods (you could also get it at the TPSS Co-Op), you definitely need to get it "original" without any added sweetener or vanilla flavoring, to really enjoy it. |
I'm just saying I think the reason store bought almond milk tastes like glue is bc of the filler liquids. The ingredients are not just almond and water. Unless you make it at home. I haven't tried it but I hear it's much better and I'm guessing wouldn't taste like glue/chemicals. |
The downside of almond milk is how wasteful it is. Each almond requires some gawdawful amount of water to produce and most almonds come from drought stricken California. |
I guess, but I care more about the cows. |
FYI, the almond milk that froths the best for lattes is Wegman's house brand |
| OP here. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try Pacific! |
| I *love* Engine 2 vanilla almond milk (unsweetened) |
| Almond milk can't compete with cows milk in terms of texture and taste but you do get used to it. I'll never love it though! We get the 365 brand (original), I've tried different brands and I like this the best. Good luck!! |
| Cow milk makes me feel sick if I have more than a little bit. I love almond milk. Tastes so much better. The thick consistency is weird. Never had that before. |
| I've never had thick almond milk and I've been drinking various dairy-free milks for years. In fact, I don't use it as a replacement for milk in baking as I find it a little thin. I use hemp milk when I want something creamier. |
