I have a milk allergy and I actually like almond milk. If what you're using has a gooey consistency, it probably has thickeners. You can try a different brand that doesn't have thickeners in the ingredients list, or try a different kind of nut milk. None of them are as tasty as actual milk so if that's your quest, give it up. I would be drinking real milk if I could.
I am lactose intolerant and have tried all the "milks". Almond milk is definitely superior. Your are correct that they are probably adding a thickener, because almond milk is actually usually quite runny. The best almond milk is "Pacific" brand from Whole Foods (you could also get it at the TPSS Co-Op), you definitely need to get it "original" without any added sweetener or vanilla flavoring, to really enjoy it.
