Emerald Chase actually used to go to Oakton HS. They got rezoned.

But they are pushing to change both their middle and high school. And they are trying to do it under the guise of their neighborhood being connected by trails to another neighborhood and therefore they should all be kept together. There are many neighborhoods in this county that are connected by trails, but go to different schools. Why are they special? It just feels disingenuous and like a push to get into Chantilly, which is ridiculous because it’s overcrowded. FCPS doesn’t care whether it will be crowded or not when your current elementary schoolers are in high school. They care about right now. The whole thing just comes off entitled and selfish.

This is exactly it. They are trying to use this as an opportunity to get rezoned to Chantilly because they think it's a better school than Westfields and South Lakes. They don't even talk about how a lot of their kids' friends at Carson will go to Westfields with them. And that most of the kids that go to Franklin will go to Oakton, not Chantilly. It's a false argument for a bunch of people who just want the "better" high school.

*Why can't FCPS rejigger neighborhoods that go to Franklin and Carson so that all the kids from Franklin go to Oakton and nobody from Carson goes to Oakton. It will literally just switch two schools, I think. Does anyone from Franklin go to Chantilly other than Oak Hill?

1. Lobby to stay at Oak Hill along with the Franklin Farm/Navy Island kids being sent there. There is room, I think according to the slides.
2. Go to Franklin along with the Navy Island. Again, I think there is room.
3. Lobby to go to Oakton along with the Navy Island. Chantilly is a non-starter.

I disagree with this gambit. If you want to attend Oakton HS pony up the cash to buy a house in Oakton. I don’t want to be fighting five years from now to keep my Oakton address home zoned to Oakton HS to accommodate “zone stability” for the Emerald Chase vultures.

Just because your town name is Oakton and the high school name is Oakton doesn't make it your community high school. Ask all the children all over FCPS who live much closer to one high school and go to a different one. The name doesn't matter, you can't use it as an excuse.

This is the silliest post.

Of course, if you live in Oakton you should attend the Oakton neighborhood high school. If you live in Lorton you should attend the Lorton neighborhood high school. If you live in Falls Church, you should attend the Falls Church neighborhood high school. It really is that simple.

At a minimum, students should be zoned for the high school that shares their home zip code, with all boundary tweaks limited to neighborhoods with zip codes outside of the immediate high school zip code.

The shared zip code should be locked in, with no rezoning of neighborhoods that share a zip code with the high school.

This common sense solution would provide stability for so many families.

Is this true? Lees Corner and Oak Hill (Chantilly Highlands and adjacent Franklin Farm on that side of parkway) go to Chantilly.
Crossfield and most of Navy go to Oakton. How much of Waples Mill goes to Franklin?

There may be a handful of Westfield there, too.

Lots of the Oak Hill kids are in the center at Carson. Forgot about that.

Sounds like you are making the case for all the homes with a Herndon address and zip code to attend Herndon High School and not Langley.

I don't know anything about or know anyone from that part of the county, but sure.

If the house has the exact same zip code as the high school, they should be zoned for that high school.

Well, maybe the school board should’ve listened to the community before getting to this point. We don’t want unnecessary boundary changes.

I keep hearing the pathetic talking point that there hasn’t been a comprehensive boundary change in 40 years. But they lie by omitting that the boundaries have changed, when necessary, many many times over that time.

Sandy Anderson and Kyle McDaniel and their misguided crusade need to be stopped before they do real damage to families in the county.

Prior big changes including a comprehensive involved: closing schools, adding optional programs, repurposing schools, and changing program locations. This one does not but it does help Marshall and Mclean by using new capacity at Falls Church HS, Madison HS, and Langley surplus. Does it need refinement? Yes.

Some people who always vote yes on bond referendums were considering a no vote if FCPS chose NOT to use new capacity. 2025 bond is Centreville construction.

More than 1 FCPS high school in the same Falls Church zip code?
