So today we got a letter from school saying that DD met the gifted and talented designation. It listed her InView scores in 5 categories, but doesn't say anything further about those test results. Are we all getting something further about it at a later point?
Also, in the space for next year's math group, it's just blank - is that normal? The stuff about the reading instructional recommendation is nearly incomprehensible. Something about using William and Mary and Junior Great Books where appropriate. I just REALLY wish MCPS could communicate more clearly! |
| You will receive no further information on inview. The scores you see are percentiles. The math block would normally contain the same type of content you saw in Reading. Did DD score well in Math/has she been receiving enriched math instruction already? It may be a misprint, or it may be that they aren't classifying her as gifted in math. |
| We also got it today. Kiddo rocked it, but is there any clarification to what the categories are testing? DD got a 99 in both Quantitative reasoning and Verbal reasoning - Words. I understand the general concepts of those terms, but what kind of questions or concepts were they being tested on? |
| If you Google around for information on the inview, you can find 1 sample question in each category. |

OP here. I understand what the InView assessed, but the reported results don't tell me much. I thought there would be a full written assessment.
I'm thinking the math section is blank because her quantitative reasoning score was just so-so. It's just such a weird form and relatively useless (like the report cards). For those I just wish the teachers could write a short paragraph describing your child instead of only doing it quantitatively. |
Thanks... I really should be better at googling for myself
I found this PDF that has a few questions from each category. Makes more sense now. Thanks PP. |
| Yes, OP, I understand your disappointment. It is a form letter. The company that makes these tests can provide a very detailed analysis. If MCPS receives it, they opt not to share with parents. Frustrating, |
| Do kids that aren't designated as GT get their inview scores? |
Yes. |
| Does that means she gets into the highly gifted center for your cluster? Our DD is in 1st grade and just trying to figure out how it works. |
| No - this has NOTHING to do with the HGC. It is only used for placement/enrichment in the homeschool, if that. HGC is a completely different test/application in the third grade. |
| Although with such high verbal scores, it is somewhat likely she'll also rock the test to get into HGC if she chooses to go that route. |
| It's correct that the gifted designation is given to a much broader population than get accepted to the HGCs (which serve about 4% of the population). |
| DD is in K. What grade does this start? |

Got the letter today.
For DS, he got: Mathematical Instructional Recommendation: The Staff recommends your child begin the year in the following instructional mathematic groups: On grade level with enrichment and/or acceleration within the grade level curriculum. Aside from what we got, are there other types of designations as in: (1) on grade level? (2) above grade level? DS got a 77 on the Quantitative Reasoning but scored much higher in the other categories. Does this means he will not be considered for Compacted Math in 4th grade? FWIW, we have been told his MAP-P scores has always been in the 99% since K and he has always been in "enriched/accelerated at grade level in math" (not that we know if they even do anything different in school!) so I am a bit surprised by his Quantitative Reasoning score. |
