What kind of professional help do we seek to learn to control temper/anger?

I have an anger problem that is affecting my family and I want to learn to control it. What kind of professional help should I seek? A therapist? I don't know f it is related but as a child I was sexually abused by a friend of my parents and I also suffered repeatedly physical abuse by my father - beatings, cigaret burns, etc.

I would like recommendations for a therapist to discuss my childhood issues and some other professional help to learn to control my anger issues - I'm not sure what type of professional to consult for the later.

In any event, I would like recommendation. I'm in Reston and someone near me is better. I have MDIPA insurance but could pay out of pocket for the right professional who could help me. I'm desperate for help.

Do you have an EAP program at work? You can use that to find someone.

Have you taken an anger management class? They can be a good place to start. Many of my clients have found them to be very helpful. Your insurance may have a preferred provider, but if not you can google anger management classes and your location and you should be able to come up with one.

As someone that has taken Rx, it is good to first work in non-prescription when you can, or let a medical professional recommend after a full eval before seeking it. You want to treat the source, and help remove he symptoms, but getting an an rx can also be addictive if you don't prioritize the therapy and thinking behind the visceral responses

Look for someone that specializes in DBT therapy
Call your insurance or look online through the portal and find the closest provider in the meantime. Sorry I don't have a recommendation near you.

Kudos to you for recognizing you need some help. It sounds like you have deep seated issues related to trauma you experienced in early life. You should probably enroll in an anger management class, but also explore your issues through therapy. It's likely that you have PTSD, and very possible that you have other psychiatric disorders as well. But the good news is that these can be treated, by therapy, meds, or a combination of the two.

What does DBT stands for?

Not the PP, but I believe it's Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

I was just reading in our church bulletin a man's experience of letting go of his years of abuse at his father's hands. Our church runs anger-management workshops. If you are in a church or temple, ask around.

These workshops for men totally help. You learn to use 8-10 techniques to lower the thermometer of anger. Applaud yourself for the small steps. You will find trigger points from your youth that you constantly want to either repress (anger) or rectify (anger). This will allow you to get out of a potential situation before it even happens. People will want to be way more around you and reward yourself for every time you overcome a situation. You're on your way OP. Congrats.

Can you give more info about the workshops you are referring to OP? Even a name I can google? Not OP. The 8-10 techniques sound like exactly what I'm looking for.
