We moved to the area beginning the 2nd semester and have 2 boys who play lacrosse. We are looking for the right club for them and obviously Madlax is on the list. Have heard good things and bad things about the club and the owner. Read the the Deadspin emails and they are pretty disturbing.
For those who play for Madlax, what made you decide on Madlax despite the owner? Really interested because to be honest, I am even a little uncomfortable letting our kids try out to play for that guy. |
It's all about priorities. Madlax is a brand name. Yes, not all good. But if your goal is to play college, from a skill and recruitment angle, it's worth taking the bitter with the sweet. If your priority is to have fun, play for the love of the game, and aren't especially interested in playing at the next level, definitely look elsewhere. |
This is thread is in the wrong section. Has absolutely nothing to do with schools, private, independent or public. |
Yet there are 6 other lax threads that survive here. If you don't like it, just ignore the thread. |
You mean threads like "IAC Lacrosse" or "Lacross at St. Albans"? Threads that are actually about lacrosse at private schools in the private school forum? |
If you read those threads, they extend far beyond the original topics.
Not a big deal. Chill out. |
Where are you moving to? How old are your kids?
All the HS coaches w/recruiting ability are crazy, so.... Pick your crazy. |
Have your boys tryout and get a look up close for yourself. I like making my own decisions based on personal experience and seeing one tryout was all it took for me to make one. Other family's are very happy with the club and the level of instruction/coaching their boys receive. We are a world full of different shapes and sizes....what fits you best may be different than someone else and that is great. As far as the Deadspin...yeah, the guy lost his cool and screwed up royally, but if he did only half of what he claimed to have done for that kid and the family doesn't have the guts/decency to return a e-mail.....you can see why the guy was so hurt/insulted/pissed off etc. It was a bad situation and something both coaches and parents can certainly learn from. |
Here's my take as a MadLax parent. Great group of parents and kids. My kid got way better during summer practices even though he rarely played or only when the game got out of reach. Cabell is an over the top personality. However, you rarely see him unless your kid is the next chosen one. You will notice him in tryouts screaming at 11 and 12 year old kids.
He lets his coaches coach and work on skill development. One tip, if your kid decides not to stay with MadLax, make sure you notify them in writing or they will continue to charge you monthly/quarterly fees even though your kid isn't playing in the fall/spring. I'm a referee as well. The mad lax kids get the game and are set up well to get to the next level. |
Madlax was a complete waste of time and money for our son. And he was/is good enough to play for Gonzaga High School, though certainly not a star. |
We have a different take. Our son was at Madlax and it was fine for awhile. But we decided to leave for a different club for reasons I won't elaborate on. We were very polite about it, but got a very rude email and phone call from him. We knew that would happen because we had other friends who had gotten similar treatment. We left when our contract had been completed, but had to fight to not have our credit card charged for an extra amount. We actually switched clubs one more time later on for different reasons. When we left the 2nd club, all we got was a "thank you ... we'd love to have you back" response. Even if the parents mentioned in the Deadspin article didn't communicate well with the guy, I don't see how anyone can defend that stuff he wrote (and we received similar words). Businesses should not attack clients if they decide to take their money elsewhere. I'm glad we didn't give him more money and didn't have to sheepishly explain any more to others why we played for that club. When I look back on it, letting our kid play for them sent a wrong message to our son. |
Perfectly stated. |

Our son has been playing for mad lax for 3 seasons and we have no complaints other than its a little expensive. While my husband and I have not dealt with Cabbell that often, we haven't had any type negative interaction with him. We do find the coaching to be very strong and our son seems to love the boys on his team from the various schools. |
Interesting. The boys on my son's team are a large part of the reason my son may not go back after three seasons with Madlax. And his coaches definitely favored one kind of player--and it's not the kind of player--or kid--that my son wants to play with. I"m sure this is too general to apply to all Madlax teams, his particular team just didn't come together well. He'll be looking for a team in the fall where the bad habits of arrogant players are coached out of players, not encouraged. |
