Payne elementary

Anonymous
Hi all,

Interested in any opinions of Payne, esp. from those with first hand experience or kids there. Hoping to move somewhere on the Hill and kid(s) on the way in the near future. Hear great things about the usual suspects, Watkins, Maury, Ludlow, etc., but wondering about Payne. Is it improving? Will it in the next few years?

Thanks for any opinions.

The early childhood program is fine and in demand, and the building was nicely renovated last year, but high SES families don't stay for K or above yet. The principal was canned last year and I haven't heard much about the new one. School is improving in its delivery of remedial education. Can't see it working for you past PreK4.

I would look into Miner over Payne

I would not buy a house anywhere other than Brent, Maury, Watkins or L-T. Things just aren't going to be all that different in 5 years. Even J.O is not great for older kids and it is way ahead of Payne, Miner and Tyler and has the S-H feed.

Really?

It's too bad to hear these negative opinions about Payne...love this part of the hill.

This. I know 4 families with 4-5 year olds in-bounds for Payne. Two just moved. Two are going to private schools.

My children were at Payne for preschool and we had a great experience. It sounds like the preschool will be entirely in-boundary next year. Maybe people will start to stay beyond K?

We live IB for Payne and love the neighborhood. However, DD goes to LT OOB.

Hope so too. Will yours stay?

I think the best place to buy right now is in the Capitol Riverfront. Lots of new housing coming online in the next 2 years, and Van Ness is off to a pretty good start.

If you want to live in a small 2br condo/coop (likely with high fees), or a million-dollar townhome next to the railroad tracks, I totally agree.

Payne has a fairly high population of homeless kids, being so close to DC General. That's where Relisha Rudd was attending when she went missing.

So in the other threads about the locations for the new shelters there are comments about most of the kids in the DC General family shelter being under 2. Does anyone here know how many attend Payne?

It looks like what you googled for me are SY2012-13 stats.
