Best same day or overnight beach trip?

Where would you go? We've done Sandy Point, where else could we go?

Rehoboth, Bethany, Dewey or VA Beach. They could all be done as an overnight trip.

I've done Rehoboth as a day trip lots of times.

The DE beaches are 2 hours and 45min away. You can definitely do it in a day, but it'll be a long day. Just make sure you're on the bay bridge before 8:30am to miss the traffic.

Cape Henlopen - 2 hrs

I think Ocean City is easiest for a day trip. You can get there in close to 2 hours if you leave EARLY. Like get in the car driving no later than 7am. You need to get across the Bay Bridge.

Then aim for North OC (don't take Rt 50 all the way in to South) and there's plenty of parking around, lots of places to eat, and you miss the madness of the boardwalk.

But you must leave early in the morning on a weekend day. Otherwise you may as well stay home. We usually drive back while it's still light out (about 6pm) since it's a long day and you're tired.

We go to the DE beaches every year. You cannot get to OC within 2 hours. It's 2 hours to the DE border or Cambridge depending on which way you go. If you don't pay attention to the speed limits 2 hours may be doable, but there's still a lot of one lane roads.

You can do a daytrip to any of the MD or DE beaches (OC, Fenwick, Bethany, Rehoboth, or Lewes).

The trick is to leave super early. Pack the night before, and throw the kids in the car at 6am. You'll miss the traffic, and you'll be on the beach by 9am.

What's your vision for the day?

Can your kids handle the beach all day? Mine can't. They need to get out of the sun and enjoy other diversions (like minigolf, games, rides).

Do you intend to pack meals or do you want access to restaurants?

Do you prefer to go on the beach by the boardwalk or a state park?

We plan to do a daytrip on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend if the weather is projected to be nice.

We will leave by 6am, and head to Bethany. We will park a couple blocks off the main drag so we can walk to the boardwalk for bathrooms and restaurants.

We will have an early dinner on our way into rehoboth to hit the boardwalk for rides and games. Then we will get ice cream at our favorite little spot before throwing the kids back in the family truckster...and hopefully they'll sleep on the ride home.

I agree; it definitely takes longer than 2 hours. I feel like a lot of the travel time estimates given on DCUM are either based on google maps with no traffic or stops, and/or posted by people with lead feet.

Yes, we live in Annapolis and go to Rehoboth often, and 2 hours is the BEST we can do, with no stops or any slow downs. Coming from DC or NOVA, you would definitely have to add 30-60 minutes to that.

I agree it's more like 3 hours from most of the dc area or 4 with traffic, but still completely doable for a long day trip.

Flag Ponds Nature Park and Chesapeake Beach are closer options on this side of the bay in Calvert County MD.

Chesapeake Beach is adorable and definitely can be done in a day. I've never swam there in the water but the beach is great. And they have a water park for swimming. I've lived here my entire life and took a day trip there on a whim last summer. So adorable.

Agree about Chesapeake Beach. Also, there is Sandy Point by Annapolis. And what about Calvert Cliffs, isn't there a beach?

Breezy Point Park, about five miles south of Chesapeake Beach.
