Appeal without WISC/new test scores

Anonymous
Did anyone apply with out WISC score card but just 3rd quarter report cards and work samples? what is the chance? kid was in pool with high NNAT 99% . Low cogat 75% and GBRS 8 failed to get the kid in first round.

I did not but would think the chance would be very, very, very low.

New information needs to be presented for the appeal. 3rd quarter progress reports and work samples won't satisfy this requirement.

I think 3rd quarter progress reports and new work samples would satisfy this requirement, BUT I don't think they would be enough to get you into AAP on appeal.

That is a really low CogAT. And you fear the WISC will say the same, which is why you are not doing it.

Or maybe it could be that it costs about $400 and not everyone has that kind of cash laying around.

The AART at our school told my friend that her kid's (low) CogAT would likely result in a very similar WISC score. As a result, she is not getting the WISC because she does fear the score will be low. (NP here)

It's a minor cost overall if you truly believe it will lead to AAP admission (if that is what you want.) but WISC often mimics CogAT.

AART mentioned they will let my kid retake cogat in fall if I don't appeal .

Even if you appeal, your kid can still do the retake, so why not appeal and if that doesn't work out, do the retake.

Thanks @ 15.28 I was worried if it will hinder her chances in 3rd grade if committee sees that appeal was rejected.

This could be true, or the WISC could help tease out a possible LD. A WISC is far more informative than a CogAT.

The committee doesn't know about the previous year's appeal process. If you end up retaking Cogat in fall during 3rd grade, the new Cogat scores and first grade NNat scores will be included in the packet. Nothing about the appeal or lack of it.

I cannot stand when AARTs say this. They should say it can but sometimes a kid just has a bad day on CogAT day. My DS got a 111 on CogAT. NNAT was 131 so he was not in pool. We had a WISC done when we saw the NNAT (before CogAT results came in). FSIQ was 145. Submitted it with original packet and got in on first round. Now imagine if I hadn't had the WISC done. I would most likely have not referred or even if I did and was thinking of appealing and thought the WISC would be close to 111, wouldn't have gotten it done. What a missed opportunity.

@ 10:42 thank you so much. You saved my day by clearing my confusion. I was worried that they would not consider NNAT scores from first grade if I appeal now and get rejected. Thanks again!
