Getting into St. Albans

So, I gather STA does its own testing. The 120 number, however, looks like a WISC number. I am not really interested in the STA number since our son has not taked that test and we have no ability to compare it with anything. But my son just took the WISC test, and we are thinking of possibly applying to STA. What does STA expect in terms of WISC? What range? How about the ERBs? My son scored 118 on WISC and mostly 7 to 8s one the ERBs. Otherwise, an above average kid in all areas, of course.

There are MANY tests which will give you a Standard Score (a score with 100 as the mean and 15 or 16 as the standard deviation), including both the Wechsler and the Woodcock-Johnson achievement tests. It's a normal way of scoring a test, so that scores can be compared across different tests. The 7's and 8's you refer to are stanines; standard scores which have been clumped into 9 groups. I have no idea what St. Albans uses, but the fact that it is reported as a Standard Score tells you nothing about what test it is!

It's not a WISC score, it's from the Otis Lemon Intelligence Test. STA uses the OLIT as their admission test.

From Beauvoir apps they expect to see at least a 120, but will accept a lower score depending on other criteria.

The 120 I'm referring to here is in response to your WISC question.

Do you mean Otis-Lennon? The OLSAT (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test)?

That's right same test. Some refer to it as a group intelligence test.

I can't speak for NPS, but I do know that St. Pats does place quite a few boys at STA every year. This past year, I know 5 were accepted and I believe all 5 matriculated.

The 5 boys were entering 7th grade. I know there were another couple for 9th grade but I am not sure about 4th. I know there were a few girls who entered 4th this year at NCS from St. Pats but I haven't heard anything about the boys.

I never heard that term. What is a group intelligence test?

Question for St. Albans parents out there with an average or above average child (strictly meaning less than 120 WISC) - does your child struggle with the work required by St. Albans? I know motivation factors into what kids (and people in general) are capable of accomplishing. But I'm wondering (if DS is fortunate to get accepted) if we're setting him up for failure or creating a situation where he may be stressed out or lacking in confidence. Any thoughts?

ALL the boys get stressed out and lose their confidence in C Form (4th grade). That's because each one realizes that they are surrounded by either someone much smarter, much more athletic, much better looking, etc., etc. But that seems to be the STA way - they break you down, only to build you up again, in their mold, better in every conceivable way.

PP-- is that really true? Its sort of sad to think that the boys are that broken down and disheartened. How is it then that STA builds you up again??

I've heard before from very talented children who graduated from St A that they are "broken." Some kids handle it better than others. Lots of parents get PO'd during the time it is happening, and then seem to have forgotten it by graduation. (I don't like the idea of breaking at all, just reporting what seems to me to happen.)
