You have to play club- on an A team- to be recruited by a college from the DMV. You (student AND parents) have to be on good terms with the coach. Going to a private school with a competitive athletic program may help as well.

For freshman who want a shot at varsity this spring what is the best advice you can give them for participating in off season events (eg work outs and tournaments etc)? I told my son participate in as many events as he can, be the best teammate he can be and show enthusiasm. Does anyone have any other advice?

Listen, watch, communicate on field, file mistakes and have them educate not fester. Play with confidence. The latter 2 are tough to do as freshmen.

Take what happened and they learned positive and negative as a template to be ready for the next one. And work at it a bit between workouts, even if some of that is visualization.

Good advice overall. I told my kids, act like you're already on varsity. That is, attend all the activities, first off. If you're on varsity, none of those are optional, so don't skip any. Give max effort while you're in practices. Play with confidence but avoid being cocky.

Overall, set a goal to make varsity, but if you don't and you end up on JV, it's not the end of the world--if you're any good you'll get way more PT on JV than you would on varsity, so use the season to develop and get better and then set your goal to make varsity (and also make a push to start) sophomore year. Enjoy the process, playing for your school team is way more fun than club.

I have one son that is playing a sport in D1 and a big thing coaches want.... Be Coachable.

How often do freshman make varsity at WCAC schools

i can’t speak to public. My kid is private and it’s quite unusual that we will have 2 freshmen starters. These boys are also gigantic. They certainly don’t look like freshman and the one i mentioned is a true 28.

Let's all keep in mind that all "privates" are not equal. With the exception of SJC, GP, Landon and Gonzaga, playing and even starting as a freshman is not totally unusual. It's certainly an accomplishment and something every kid should be proud of, but it does not mean they are the next Connor Shellenberger or destined for D1 greatness (or D1 at all). Likewise, playing JV your freshman year (at any private or public) does not mean the chance of playing D1 is not in your future.
