This Laura Stewart/Bethany Mandel race between ultra partisans on the left and right is going to be exhausting. It’s troubling that the BOE race is going to be so partisan. For all of her faults, at least Shebra Evans seems to stick to the issues that are relevant to the BOE and more middle of the road on issues that aren’t.

What issues does Shebra stick to? What does Shebra believe in? I've been waiting years to find out.

You can watch the years of BOE meetings that Shebra has been a part of to find out. Unlike the other 2 ideologues in the race, she doesn’t take to twitter to comment on everything going on in the country, so you won’t be able to find out that way.

Although I guess you could say the same about Laura Stewart, who made her formerly public twitter page private once she decided to run for office. I wonder what historical posts she was so worried about that made her take down the whole page and keep it out of view.

Shebra could be an ideologue if she had ideas to share. I've looked at Shebra's Twitter account. Pretty sparse, accept for wishing her daughter well in college (which is truly very sweet) and thanking schools for having her in for a visit.

I don’t think she wants to be an ideologue. It’s not her personal style and it isn’t politically popular when you’re on the BOE, which is probably why Laura Stewart switched her twitter account to private and blocked anyone from seeing her ideas there once she decided to run for office as the accountability and transparency candidate.

Evans has to have an idea before she can be an ideologue but I will still take her benign neglect over Laura Stewart or Bethany Mandel (literally two sides of the same coin) any day.

You can try to gaslight Laura Stewart by saying she is similar to Bethany Mandel, but that just catch traction with anyone.

Far left vs. far right. Both live in echo chambers. Correct me where I’m wrong.

You live in a polarized world. So sorry about that.

I would be willing to consider supporting Shebra Evans. The problem is that Shebra just hasn't done anything on the BOE for the last 8 years. Shebra rubber-stamped Smith and McKnight positions.

The BOE deliberated those hires in closed sessions. How do you know what happened there? One person who probably got a play-by-play was Laura Stewart. Did she share the readout with you?

The anti-Stewart trolling is really over the top tonight

Dismissing everyone who disagrees with you or everyone who says something you don’t like is how we got today’s MCPS.

It's merely factual to characterize the anti-Stewart troll posts as anti-Stewart troll posts.

I looked up the candidates on credible sources like moco360. Mandrel is cray-cray. Evans and Stewart seem basically the same in terms of their positions. Evans is an incumbent who hasn't done much and I'm not happy with the direction things are going so will support Stewart.

+1

I’m looking forward to candidate forums and things like that where we can see how the 2 normal candidates differ from each other. Although I do find it odd that Laura Stewart did 2 things so far after filing for her candidacy: created a campaign website where 2 of the 3 prongs of her campaign are Accountability and Transparency but then shut down her formerly public twitter site so that there’s no longer any Transparency into what she believes or holding her Accountable for prior views and posts. Hopefully this kind of “transparency and accountability for thee but not for me” doesn’t carry over to her service on the Board and is then an insider.

For most people, the major issue in this campaign will not be "Did the candidate put their Twitter account on private after they filed for candidacy"?

Correct. I think it will be more about whether a candidate calling for accountability and transparency can be trusted when they don’t apply those same standards to their own views and platform.

Weird to be so obsessed about one person's account on a dying social media platform, but you do you.

Just stop it. You know she took down twitter because her prior posts are politically damaging. Refusing to admit that and chalking it up to a coincidence of her moving away from a dying platform is weak sauce.

It’s dishonest because she has a campaign account that she’s regularly posting too. It says a lot about her integrity.

Imagine having a personal account as well as a campaign account! Scandal! Where will it all end!

It’s dishonest to say “I’m locking my personal account because the platform is dying” while also regularly posting to a campaign account on the same platform.

Why is the District 4 race getting all the commentary here? Anyone have anything to say about the District 2 or at-large candidates?

Imagine posting your views for years to a public account and using it for your advocacy and then locking it to public view once you decide to run for office on a platform of Accountability and Transparency! Given how blatantly hypocritical that is, one has to wonder what you’d be so ashamed of to make your first act as the Transparency and Accountability candidate hiding your years of commentary, views and advocacy from the public.

Because someone is obsessed with the one of the District 4 candidates.

It’s totally common to make a personal account private when you start a campaign, especially when you’ve used it to share info about your kids/family over the years.

At least one of the MoCo right wing online trolls has an actual criminal history of stalking and owns a weapon. I wouldn’t want him scouring my old tweets for information either. Another right wing online troll has shared screenshots of his “enemies” with their address or phone number on it. There are unhinged people and the sadsack frustrated middle aged white guys who troll local politics but don’t actually ever show up to do the hard work are part of the unhinged category.

I don’t buy it. She was a public figure for years and was openly advocating in op-eds, public testimony, speeches, meetings, etc. She clearly decided to hide her former posts on X for political reasons.

Exactly.

Much ado about twitter. She’s probably just taken down her normal account in order to delete specific posts that she deems personal and not appropriate for public consumption and will be making it live again soon. At least that’s what I’d expect a candidate focused on accountability and transparency as much as Laura Stewart has to do.

Maybe those posts and the ones where she supports McKnight and the BOE. I give her credit for challenging the MCPS line from time to time but no matter what they decide she’s never been critical of the outcome.

Makes perfect sense to me.

I live in District 4 and was undecided, but this sounds like she's a strong team player. Stewart gets my vote!

You can’t claim to run as an outsider looking to hold MCPS accountable with a mountain of tweets supporting everything the system and central office puts out. Politics 101.

What does living in district 4 have to do with it?

For the BOE, the districts are just a residency requirement for the candidates. Everyone in Montgomery County gets to vote for all of the BOE positions.
