I was reading the thread about the young mom working on her budget with the fiancé who bought the BMW and there were a lot of car-frugal posters. I thought my DH and I were pretty frugal but DCUM may have us beat:
Married 15 years, 1 kid 2 cars over that period Both used/paid in cash ($27k total) What are your car numbers frugal DCUMers? |
| Frugal - we got a 3 year old car gifted to us from a family member who wanted a new one. |
| We've had two cars in 7 years but only because the first one got totaled. Paid cash for both. Do not plan on buying another car until the current one dies, is totaled or DD starts college at location where car is useful, then we'd gift it. |
|
Married 17 years.
Bought four cars. Total 160k. Not counting the cars we had when we married. |
|
Married 11 years, 3 cars, $70k
No current car debt. |
|
One new Toyota Corolla bought when DS was born. One new Mazda 5 bought when DD was born. Kids are 11 and 6. No prior cars. Total: 35K |
|
Married 11 years. $250K HHI. Pretty sure we'll beat everyone here.
Two cars, both bought new for cash. One Nissan - $14K One Honda - $19K |
| It's not a competition to be the cheapest. |
|
Married 7 years
2 kids under 5 1 paid off Toyota sedan (8 years old) HHI $450k (HHI seems relevant to this discussion) |
| Married 12 years, 11 cars, new except one used, two kids 9 and 12. Bringing up the rear here, taking one for the team. |
Married ten years. Have owned two cars- 1 Toyota- $1500 1 Subaru-$14000 Hhi ~175k |
Pp here, just to add, only counted the cars we bought together, after we got married. If you count what we brought into the marriage, 13 cars. |
PP here. Whelp, guess you win. We were a 1-car family until we had our second, when we decided it wasn't safe not to have a backup car. If you can get by on a $1500 beater or only 1 car (if you have kids), kudos to you. |

9 years of marriage 1 new Honda worth 17K We mostly walk or take metro if possible. Cars Are not our thing. |
Except you didn't answer the question of how much you spent. |
