Fairness (or lack of) in Rec Baseball Playing Time

Anonymous
DS was on the bench for almost 2 hours the other night, played just half an inning in the outfield which lasted about 10 minutes, and he barely needed to move.

I think this is BS but maybe that's how they do it in baseball? He's done soccer and basketball and both had very fair minimum playtime rules/guidelines that ensure kids play at the minimum half of the game (not counting overtime).

baseball blows unless you're a star player...

I used to be a junior high coach and parents of players who didn't give it their all at practice, didn't come to practice, or were just plain terrible always complained about a lack of playing time. My school did not have a playing time rule therefore I played kids who put in a great effort or were talented. I never agreed with playing time rules anyway. Life isn't fair.

OP you are correct--baseball blows.

How old is your child? Does the league have playing time rules or guidelines?

How old is the child?

Is this an instructional division or PeeWee or higher?

Back when our DS was in instructional and Rookie, the coaches rotated like clockwork. Now, still rotation, but the better players do get more time. (So they might play 5 or 6 innings, vs. 3 or 4.)

Everyone bats their turn.

How old is your son and is this an official little league team? In our Little League, this could only happen in Majors.

This is not what we mean. We mean kids who come to all practices, good attitude, try and still barely - barely - get to play, IN A REC SPORT

Coaches can have huge egos. They want to win. They smell victory, or a winning season, and lose sight that this is a rec league where player development (development of every player) should be the main focus.

Wrong. Development needs to focus on the best prospects. The kids who have talent and work really hard.

If you want your clearly untalented kid to play, then COACH. I've only got so many bullets in my arm for BP. You better believe I use them first on my kid, then the assistant coach's kid, then the other kids in order of talent. I can't tell you how mad I get when I call a kid in from RF for his two swings, and he's just putting on his helmet when the previous kid finishes his two swings.

Then Mommy and Mommy's "good female friend" get mad when young Ashton only plays two innings in RF. Yeah, okay. If you can't coach, get your sperm donor or hire sone college kid. Look in the mirror.

Calm down, baseball isn't even a real sport. This is like being worked up over a game o Go Fish.

it's plain wrong regardless of level in rec sport if a kid played 10 min out of a 2 hour game.

might as well ask the kid to quit?

My son is one of the better players on his rec team and does get more playing time (6th grade) than most kids. However, the coach would never leave a player sitting on the bench like your son's coach. Every kid gets to play for at least 2/3 of the game. While the coach does tend to put the better players in key positions for most innings, every single player gets a chance to play infield for an inning. Last season we had a child who couldn't throw, catch or hit and he still got to play and was cheered on in every single game. The only exception has been when kids were unsportsmanlike.

DH coaches a 2nd grade BCC team and all kids have to have equal playing time at that age.

I suggest checking with the league to see what the rules are. Kids can't improve without playing time.

Are you the asshole who posted earlier about wanted to exclude kids from rec basketball? Why are you even coaching rec sports?
