Any idea of the IQ of children in HGC/magnet programs?

Anonymous

Satisfy my idle curiosity please.

Do you happen to know the IQ (full score or one particular subset) of a child in the HGC or magnet programs?
I know most parents do not know the IQ scores of their children, but some private schools require it and some psychological evaluations include an IQ test.

Thank you

OP here, pointing out that I am not the OP of any of the previous HGC threads. In case you were wondering how many nutsos there were!

Don't know.. not that curious. Sorry. DC does pretty well in school, scores top x% in tests. That's good enough.

No idea, never tested. Don't care.

I know my son's IQ from when we had him tested for private preschools and later for learning disabilities. He was in the HGC, then MS magnet, now HS magnet. His full scale IQ is 143, which is the 99.8th percentile.

Why are people tempted to feed trolls? My kid had 2 IQ tests with very different results. As a result, I don't have any faith in those tests. Nor do I see the point of OP collecting anecdotal information.

What do you think happened? This is not normal, all other things being equal, and could have been due to practitioner error.

IQ tests are unfairly maligned by the general population. It's not the IQ tests themselves, it's the people using it that are at fault.
IQ tests are very delicate, extremely useful tools constructed and updated with care by professionals. However their intended use is in a clinical setting. Too often IQ tests are given by schools and businesses to select for individuals they think they want and as a result the scores are misinterpreted by non-professionals and the wrong people are selected.

NP and first, there are a few different tests and in some kids they can produce differing results especially if they have a weakness in some areas. there's one called das i think that requires at least a little written work. if a child has motor delays or dysgraphia and the tester doesn't know this or take that into account they may get no credit for that section which would pull down the scores significantly.

second, many young kids or kids with attention issues can focus some days and cannot focus some days which can create very different results.

148 for one DC. 138 w/ an LD for DC2.

Compared to peers based solely on interaction (i.e. not knowing the IQ scores of fellow students), neither was the smartest kid in the magnet.

I would note that DC2 was consistently called "not that bright" and "lazy" by teachers and denied access to acceleration or advanced instructional opportunities and IEP/504 supports over the course of several years until we provided outside testing and diagnosis. Now provided such opportunities, DC is doing fine with them.

Lots, evidently.

I don't know my kid's IQ, I don't know my IQ, I don't know my partner's IQ, and I don't care.

I know my IQ and knew it from a young age. All I can tell you is I wish I didn't. I wish my parents didn't tell me I was "gifted" and didn't set impossibly high expectations for me. In the end - I've just felt like a failure because I never could live up to that "number".

I tested my cats' IQ.
Car 1 scored like a feline Einstein and Cat 2 did regular.

Well, I think it's helpful for people who are frustrated because their child didn't get admitted. It's hard to understand that the population that the HGCs are intended for is the top 2 - 3% (whether that's what they actually do is another story).

My kid had a full scale score on the WISC of 146. He attended the HGC and MS magnets.
