Masking policy Arlington Diocesan Schools

So for all intents and purposes, kids have been “maskless” for months/years. This debate isn’t about health — it’s about virtue signaling and obedience and control and politics. Nothing more.

Yeah - the whole thing is “health theater” that makes TSA look like an amazingly effective agency.

Now suddenly the maskers want to move the goalposts again—having to admit that the cloth masks most kids have been wearing for a year and a half don’t do anything, now the new thing is everyone has to wear N95 masks. It. Will. Never. End.

Well, we’re done with mandatory masks, hallelujah! My kids were singing “This Little Light of Mine” in the car this morning on the way to school they were so happy.

My kids are vaxxed and masked for now because the numbers are high. We will revisit the decision later.

I do think that COVID has scrambled a lot of people’s brains though and caused a lot of you to have anxiety disorders.

This strain of COVID is milder and is like a terrible cold or flu or is even asymptomatic in 99% of kids.

Masking has some benefits for transmission, but really you need to be wearing a properly fitted respirator correctly 100 percent of the time for it to really be fool proof. The majority of countries in the Western world do not have mask mandates for school children.

Thank you! I have done the same!

I am one of the PP whose children have said they intend to stay away from unmasked peers. I definitely told my children not to make remarks of any kind regarding mask usage or lack thereof. However, we always remind our children to remove themselves from situations/people that seem risky, dangerous, or make them uncomfortable. I see their intent to stay away from unmasked kids (which, by the way, was their/their friends' own idea - we definitely did not suggest that) as an extension of situational awareness.

Your kids think an unmasked kid is dangerous and a kid wearing an Etsy mask is safe. Do better parenting. It’s on you. I live in Maryland so I’m watching how this goes but can’t wait to let my kids unmask. They are compliant but it clearly impacts learning and socialization. Anyone who denies costs of masking has zero credibility.

“Etsy mask” hahaha that’s so true and such a pithy way to put it.

All those little dinosaur themed pieces of cloth that have been hiding our kindergarteners’ faces for a year and a half can finally be put away. We will keep one for the memory box and tell stories about it one day.

Etsy delusions.

How does a mask impact learning and socialization??? Masks ALLOW both of those to happen a bit more safely.

If you haven’t purchased high quality masks for your kids after 2 years, I am not really sure what to tell you. My kids have worn KN-95s all along.

I respect the concept, but I think if your community resorts to a petition, the communication/sense of community is broken.

I have gone to my child's principal with my thoughts. Got warm feedback, with no admonishment or endorsement.

My children were told they must mask up to protect their teachers (many of whom are in high risk groups-and have no say over what happens in their workplace). Also, to avoid have to quarantine, they did multiple times last year.

My child said they understood, and added that they don't want to play with the kids who won't wear masks.

Conversations with individual schools are certainly encouraged and we had one too, however, schools have their hands tied and this petition sends an open message to a broader audience, namely the Arlington Diocese.

Well I’ve been in two Diocese schools fairly frequently this year as a parent volunteer and for other school-related activities and can definitely tell you that the vast majority of students are NOT wearing N95 masks.

And it’s never been policy to require N95 masks. Nice goal post shift, though.

Are people really this ridiculous? Of course kids should be wearing high quality masks. I cannot believe parents haven’t tried to protect their kids as much as possible through such an easy thing.

Are people really this clueless about the type of masks that kids have been wearing for the past year? Have you not seen countless kids with stupid little Etsy masks? Or are you just pretending that all this time you thought every kid in the Diocese was wearing an N95 mask?

I know there is a high percentage of ridiculous people in the diocese. Hence the current decision. People make terrible decisions all the time. No vaccination, crappy masks, sending their kids to school sick, on and on. Do better. Your kids are depending on you.

I was ready to sign off on my 10-year-old son NOT wearing a mask but he strongly refused because he doesn't want the teachers and principal to "hate us"! Smart kid. He said he doesn't mind wearing it.

He is unvaxxed but already had covid.

Literally governor Northam’s now-defunct mask mandate included the stupid Etsy cloth masks. All that’s been done is to roll that back.

+1

Stay away from crazies. The anti-masker families we know also happen to have bully kids. Shocker.

Good. I don’t want my kids asking children whose parents are neurotic, whiney, and paranoid and who reject common sense and science. They’re likely not good influences.

So sad that he’s been emotionally bullied into wearing a mask so the LWNJ won’t “hate” him. Not because he wants to wear it; not because he believes it’s doing anything; but because he’s afraid of people “hating” your family. So sad.

On the other hand, I don’t mind saying on an anonymous message board that my kids are in the popular crowd, and they and their friends won’t be wearing masks. So I imagine that fewer and fewer students will feel intimidated the way your son feels as time goes by.
