Not sure about most areas, but not in the DC area.

Believe it or not, people DO, ACTUALLY play golf and spend money to do it. Golf, swimming and other activities too.

It is our alternative to taking pictures of our food and posting it online

Why do old people have such a thing with instagram and/or posting a picture of a meal?

I am a NP from the one who doesn't understand golf courses but it always strikes me as funny and so "get off my lawn" that the seniors seem positively OBSESSED with people sharing stuff on social networks. Food pictures is tantamount to taking a shit on their front stoop. It hits a nerve.

Think Mayflower descendants. It's old school and exclusive and they have hosted a few golf tournaments there but hate to do it because it brings in outsiders and ruins the course. The people that work in the administration there consider them the best/finest/pick your word club in the entire country. They regularly network with other clubs and the only club, in the entire country, that they consider to be remotely on their level, is Chevy Chase. I am not a member of any of these, obviously, but as someone from the DC area, I thought that was interesting.

Not surprising in the least. You should hear by old WASPy mom, who grew up in New York attending Westchester, speak on Congo. To her it was the equivalent of going to a public mall

Do you mean Westchester CC? The club desperate to open its doors to a regularly scheduled PGA tournament only to have its contract broken by the PGA due to low attendance and TV ratings, (which is no small feat in greater New York City). There's a little club Mamaroneck that makes Westchester look like a muni dog track. PS - the real WASPs are across the border at the Round Hill Club (or at WFGC), not at Westchester; they are just pretenders.

Eh, Westchester is pretty damn WASPy. (As is the county it's named after)

Nah, it's all relative for the County. Round Hill (obviously in Greenwich), Winged Foot and even Quaker Ridge are much more so.

I worked for a few years a a country club in Northern Virginia when I was in high school and college. I'm not saying ALL the members were like this, but a majority of the members were--let's just say they were not the friendliest people in the world.

They very much had the attitude of "I have money and you don't," and their kids seemed to adopt this "holier than thou" attitude. The kids would disrespect their friends and even their parents, let alone the lonely "workers" like me.

I once had a kid send me back to make him 4 different flavors of milkshake and his parents just smiled at him, proud of the fact that he was ordering me around, and not being nice about it. Some of the adult members treated me like I was stupid, when I was attending a better university than their children were. It was an all-around "attitude" that, of course, not everyone possessed, but it was still too much for my taste.

I'm not saying this is true about every country club, but I'd rather join a community pool and find a local tennis or golf court than be a part of an expensive and exclusive club...I know that my husband and I wouldn't end up with that attitude, but I'd be afraid that my children would pick it up from the others around them.

Just my two cents. Hope this doesn't rub anyone the wrong way.

I agree! I grew up in this area and worked at woodmont country club. Although my family was well off, I was taught to earn my money and thus worked every summer- the vibe I got from a lot of the club members was exactly holier than thou......

OH BS - I grew up in Rye and had a couple of friends who were members there and it is about 15 minutes to drive there typically.

Does anyone know how much a social or tennis membership costs at the VA clubls, like Bellehaven or Washington Golf? Curious how much less the initiation fee usually is for a non-golf membership.

There is no social/tennis membership at WGCC - one membership class. $95K - 3-4 year waiting list

A friend just added their name to the WGCC list, and the word is it's a 5 year list now.

I'd be interested to know any details about Belle Haven now.

Highly doubt it. Anyone can get into Chevy nowadways (non diverse people anyway). It is not what I would call elite society. Maybe a few social climbers trying to be elite but overall I would say very average normal people.
