Wild how the Republicans have done a total 180 degrees from cursing Michelle Obama out for trying to get kids eating healthier and Sarah Palin defiantly holding up a 64oz Big Gulp declaring dems will have to take her soda from her cold dead hands.

Republicans don't actually stand for anything anymore. It's all just knee jerk reactionary bullshit and whatever the Orange Guy says on a particular day when the wind is blowing a particular direciton is now their gospel and they have zero memory or perspective on what it was they believed in the day before.

There’s a difference between not allowing someone to purchase something with money they earned and not allowing someone to purchase something with OUR money.

Why should we spend taxpayer money on soda to make people obese and give them diabetes? And then we need to pay again for their expensive medical care for those conditions. It’s insane.

So why the umbrage about kids' lunches under the Obama admin?

The replacements were things like whole wheat pizza. MAHA is proposing that all that junk be eliminated. Kids should be eating things like salad, veg, whole grains, fresh fruit and fresh meat for lunch. Nothing processed should be allowed in schools. No goldfish. No cookies. No juice. No chocolate milk. No waffles and syrup. No tater tots. No chicken nuggets. All that garbage is out.

LOOOOOOL forever @ the thought of a R administration giving more money to schools for healthier school lunches. When pigs fly!

He also wouldn’t have any say over that because the USDA runs the school lunch program. I mean if he can make a deal with the USDA that would be great, but maybe he should look at the failures of Michelle Obama’s efforts to see what he is up against.

DP. Agreed, but there is no way he's actually run a cost analysis on this proposition. He's betting on people being gullible.

They don't even know that he wants whole grains out of school lunches. It's total projection of what they want, regardless of what he is actually saying. Typical.

And if they do downsize or defund the USDA, expect our kids to be eating pig slop anyway!

The USDA is in charge of food stamps, not HHS.

The typical MAGA is chock full of notions about what needs to be changed yet they don't even understand what they are talking about.

They don't, but you do, right?

Vaccines have eliminated and vastly reduced the incidence of a number of serious infectious diseases. before the vaccine was developed in the 60s, one hundred percent of the population got measles. Most recover but there are deaths and very very serious outcomes for a percentage of those infected.

They don’t even think about all this. 100 years ago we had a bunch of “schools for the blind” and “schools for the deaf,” why? Because childhood illnesses - measles especially - left a small proportion of children permanently disabled. Measles also had a death rate of around .1%.

One hundred years ago? The infectious disease scourge is way more recent then that. Every boomer and most Gen X know people that were permanently paralyzed in some part of their body from Polio. I knew a half a dozen polio victims with permanent paralysis.

No need to carp here - both of you are on the same track. I'm in the "know a half a dozen polio victims...." while my kids do not know any. In fact, when they - mid teens - asked me to compare COVID to something in my childhood, I shared stories my parents relayed to me of not being allowed to go out when there would be polio outbreaks around them. The relief my parents felt about vaccines was so palpable to me, even as a young child.

America was great when our mothers and grandmothers had to live in fear of their children getting diseases that have been virtually eradicated? Not in my book

We can pay for quality food or we can pay for healthcare down the road. The choice is ours as a nation.

Actually it seems like the choice we’ve made is neither. 🤷‍♀️

So what do you think about RFKJ's claim that whole grains are damaging to children, and they should not eat them?

Who will pay?

Many other countries manage to feed kids fresh, healthy, unprocessed foods in their school lunches at low cost. We can and should learn from them, we can and should do better and it doesn't have to cost more.

Don't they all pay more in taxes than we do, especially for the highest earners, instead of having elected a fool on the promise of tax CUTS?

I don't think she would have even needed to promise him a cabinet position, just a seat at the table that she was promising other individuals who she disagrees with.
I think he honestly could have made the difference in the election which is sad on so many levels but also true

I think it was already too late by that point. The “crunchy,” alternative, vaccine skeptic, supplements for everything, unusual fad diets will cure every illness (not diet used in the sense of calorie restriction/going on a diet, more in the general sense of “what you eat”) etc. segment of society has already moved too far right. Or too far left and no longer even votes for Democrats. She wouldn’t have picked up too many voters even if she had brought Kennedy on board. They were all for Trump instead. The Covid response and vaccine had a lot to do with accelerating this trend.

You do have to ask yourself, “should 50% of people be on Ozempic?” You don’t have to cure illness if you can prevent it. It’s not ok to eat properly, but it’s ok to take 4 medications….

Yeah... I'm pretty sure a lot of Americans don't want to pay for more taxes to create a more equitable society (Affordable education, healthcare, daycare, etc).
