My sense is that they’re waiting for Biden’s speech (today?) about dropping out before they announce a VP.

The vetting should not have begun on Monday since rumors have been swirling at least since the debate, so the vetting shouldn’t be the time-consuming issue here. If the vetting *did* only begin within the past few days, that’s concerning.

It’s also possible they’re having a hard time getting someone to say yes.

There are plenty of good candidates parading around screaming choose me. These things take time they have to be properly vetted.

I doubt they’ll make any announcement for the next week.

Astronauts are pretty heavily vetted. There's no need to overthink this. But there's also no need to announce anything early. Let the press continue to speculate.

+1

Vetting is very important, and the Harris campaign will have to make a decision quickly. Once they announce a name, a million Republicans will start digging into his past. And everyone has a history. Kelly has withstood the intense scrutiny of 2 senate elections in a purple state, with incredibly high stakes. I just don’t think it’s the same for governors.

I think Cooper from NC is a stronger candidate is terms of governing ability (NC GOP have stripped him of power yet he still managed to expand Medicaid) and I don think NC could go for Harris. Trump only won by 1.5 points and the new Dem party chair is kicking butt.

I agree, the vetting point is not something to discount. Kelly has been thoroughly vetted.

But one more plug for Roy, he's scandal-free and has never lost an election! Anyway, the VP isn't going to change the amount of time and energy into this campaign. If you aren't already, Get Involved!

Roy is a bit older than Kelly and may not be as exciting = generate as much enthusiasm as Kelly?

PP here. You are right. I think Cooper should run for Senate in 2026. That would offset if we lose Kelly’s seat. I think Kelly is the better fit.

Signed, Moderate Republican

I see as a moderate Republican that you don’t understand the way my party does things: we snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by running unelectable candidates focused on the wrong issues, endorsed by party heavyweights based on whose turn it is rather than merit. (Just like corporate America!) And then we fundraise for another two years because this time we’ll catch that rascally rabbit for sure.

This year, we’ve decided to throw in some questionable nomination practices since we don’t want to be above reproach when we claim to be the only defenders of democracy.

Maybe Kelly will become the VP nominee and you’ll have your chance.

Are you insinuating someone takes Harris out and Kelly becomes Pres? That’s what it sounds like to me. Watch your language

Just came across this interesting article...I've often thought...why can't POTUS and VPOTUS be from different parties?

https://www.azcentral.com/story/opinion/letters/2024/07/22/kamala-harris-vice-president-mitt-romney/74501674007/

Is it legislatively impossible? Has this ever been done? Why not?

Why would anyone do this? Harris has broken a record number of ties in the Senate to advance bipartisan and Democratic legislation advancing Biden’s agenda to the President’s desk. Would a Republican VP have done that?

Guess you haven't been seeing these white male governors tripping over themselves on cable TV trying to audition for Harris.

Oh. Please go learn about early American elections. It used to be that the runner up in the presidential race became the VP.

Go play "The Election of 1800" on the Hamilton soundtrack.

FWIW I believe John McCain was very close to picking Joe Lieberman as his running mate in 2008.

I lean slightly more to Bashear because we seem to like Governors.

Kelly seem like a no brainer.

Navy captain, combat pilot, astronaut and senator.
Temperament and personality appeal in the swing states.
His wife is former Rep. Gabby Giffords, a gun violence survivor (and Jewish). Which is a +2 for swing voters in the swing states.
Comes with his own body double which shoud spawn all sorts of fun conspiracy theories.
Arizona has a Dem Governor so it won't mess up the Senate if Tester and Brown get re-elected.

His main downside is that he's boring. But this is 2024 and the opponent is a narcissistic publicity hound. Boring is a virtue

Did I mention that he's a freaking astronaut?

Kelly has a great resume, no doubt about it. Is there a risk that he would take attention away from Harris? You don’t want the VP to outshine the person at the top of the ticket.

Kelly won’t outshine Harris. He’s boring AF. If we’re going with a boring old white guy go with Cooper. Much stronger in governing.

Apparently NC has a law that whenever Cooper leaves the state, his wackjob Lieutenant becomes acting governor. This would create some complications whenever he hits the campaign trail.
And while Arizona does have a Dem governor, if Kelly leaves his seat there would be a special election in 2026 (otherwise Kelly would be up for re-election in 2028). And an appointed senator would not be nearly as strong a candidate as Kelly himself.
So this is why I think it will be either Beshear or Shapiro.

This is off topic, but since Mark Robinson was mentioned, everyone should know this about him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG-ZdJydee8
