LOL, Trumpian. MM wasn't intended to address affordable housing, schools, etc. Stop trying to push "alternative facts". The point was that parking, school capacity, and tree coverage were all issues preceding MM that will not be magically fixed if we don't do MM. Worried about parking? This is a bigger threat to parking availability: https://www.arlnow.com/2020/10/08/county-moving-to-conclude-residential-parking-permit-review/ Worried about schools? Several new apartment buildings (some with AH) just opened or will open soon. They will add potentially hundreds of new kids concentrated in already-crowded schools vs. handful of new kids in MM housing spread over the county. Worried about tree coverage? McMansions follow the same requirements re: tree retention. MM doesn't kill any more trees than any other development. As someone who has followed school capacity issue for many years, I'd rather see MF housing spread over the county as compared to adding another high-rise filled with kids. Much easier to balance out the school capacities. |
So you failed statistics. Sorry to hear that. |
Was this article supposed to be pro YIMBY?
https://slate.com/business/2023/05/housing-market-affordable-real-estate-single-family.html?via=rss&fbclid=IwAR2H-orsHz75wBqBiaTc6CEa2kRsivUzDiaHV-eKT8meOq4ONtzXQbzqvEo#lhpb57pe6sj1nhc7s18 It just comes across as kind of sad. YIMBY: We have to do this thing, it’s very important! We have to immediately “upzone” your neighborhood! For these many valid reasons for which I will evidence later! Homeowners: That seems like a big change, how about we take this slow? We need more information and we don’t like the fact that it was pushed through against our wishes. YIMBY: No, NOW. *stamps feet* Homeowners: You are being really weird about this. What’s the hurry? We have a bunch of questions about… YIMBY: *Veruca Salt impression* But it WORKS in NORWAY. Homeowners: okaaaayyy… YIMBY: Look, it probably won’t be a big deal, anyway. In places where this has been done in the US they have barely built any multi family homes. Homeowners: So it doesn’t work? Then why are you in such a hurry to… YIMBY: RACIST!!! |
I guess you had fun writing that, but the reality is that your so-called YIMBY is a ... homeowner in North Arlington. In fact, he talks about being a homeowner, right there in the article:
"I’ve had plenty of time to think about what missing middle might mean for me and my single-family home. The absentee owner of the run-down house next door seems to have died in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, and his heirs haven’t sold yet. How would I feel about a multiplex building sprouting up—if not in my backyard, then in my side yard? How would I feel about all those oak trees getting cut down, and who knows how many cars parking on my street? As I reported this piece, I came to understand that asking myself these questions—that grappling with these possibilities—is in many ways the point of missing middle." |
It's a good piece. Are you sure you read it? From your summary, I think maybe you must have read a different piece. Here's an alternate summary: Opponents of the Missing Middle housing proposal: Nobody likes the proposal. If we'd wanted things to change, we would have moved somewhere where things were changing. Supporters of the Missing Middle housing proposal: We like the proposal. Also, things are changing, even without the Missing Middle housing proposal. Author: The reality is, the Missing Middle housing proposal probably isn't even going to change housing and land use very much. However, it has certainly made some people, for example me, think about the meaning of being an Arlingtonian and of the "Arlington Way". Also, there is no mention of Norway. Los Angeles, yes; Minneapolis, yes; Norway, no. As for racism, there is a discussion of demographic data (aka facts). There's a reference to a study from 2000 finding that the "Arlington Way" tends to overrepresent the opinions of white, older homeowners over other Arlingtonians. And there's a quote of one Missing Middle supporter saying, "Whoa, we just desegregated Arlingtonian," immediately followed by the author's opinion that this statement is not true. If you feel that any of these things accuse people of being racist - well, again, I think you must have read a different piece. |
It most certainly is not true. Where are all these phantom renters and Latinxs going to be when Katcher, Roy and Cunningham steamroll the Democrat primary? A historic backlash is developing in Arlington, and MMH has been the catalyst. People have had enough of the woke nonsense and are cleaning house. |
LOL, no. Move to McLean if you don’t like “woke”. |
I don't know what "woke" means but I'll be voting for Roy and Cunningham (not Katcher - I don't trust him) |
Why wouldn't you trust him? He was a prosecutor under Theo, and says he quietly pursued reform internally during her tenure. I believe him. Then when Parisa upset Theo, he went ahead and applied to be her Deputy. He got the job, and then he quit and declared against her once he knew he had the resources to run and that people would understand that the June primary rather than the November election is the time to vote for your Commonwealth's Attorney. So he can capture the voters who don't like Parisa and don't want reform, as well as those who do want reform but reform done better. That makes him a better reformer than Parisa. |
So basically you're saying he maneuvered his way into being Parisa's deputy so he could use that to help himself get elected...yeah, that's what I thought. And you wonder why I don't trust him? |
Yes, the YIMBY movement provides lots of comic relief. |
I think that you have to be more familiar with the movement and the subtext of the content. |
To understand how the grievances of the opponents of the Missing Middle Housing proposal lead them to make stuff up? |
The real “missing middle” are market rate two-three bedroom mid and high rises.
However the density advocates are hypocritically against living in that kind of density. Then the “affordable” housing advocates ironically price themselves out, because more single bedroom and studios are needed to offset below market rate, subsidized housing, to fulfill their socialist and diversity fantasies. |
The irony of accusing opponents of “upzoning” silliness of “making stuff up” is thick. Please, venture to the YIMBY groups Facebook pages, discords, etc…see for yourself. It’s easily accessible information if you’d care to look, though, I get the feeling that you are quite familiar. Or do some academic research, maybe try Google Scholar. Your choice..or you can just remain a local flat Earther. |
