Any discussion of lax culture really belongs on the a suburban VA board with SSSA's domination of the women's AND men's lax scene this year.
Nice win by the boy's @ Landon last night. |
Thanks for the clarification. The Bullis player had scoliosis surgery (this was reported in WaPo - I don't think it is okay to talk about specific children's medical conditions but it was in the paper) and had to make up the school that he missed. So that would technically be a medical waiver in college - kind of like Rob Pannell at Cornell. |
Are there any VA club teams that usually populate the boys SSSA team? I'd imagine they'd deserve some credit. |
Plant. |
He was allowed because Pannell appealed to the Ivy League for a 5th year and it was granted. If it hadn't, he would have simply transferred to another school (unlike several other NCAA sports, he would not have been forced to sit out a year). |
The number of moms on this board who know nothing about lacrosse is staggering. The SSSAS girls program is dominant, but the boys team - while it had a great run to close the season - is not "dominant". The dominant team in the area has been Gonzaga, but there have been a number of strong boys teams in this region. |
Gonzaga rules!!!! |
Any local teams win the npyll championship? |
The semifinals/championship is next week. |
Gonzaga still rules! |
I'll send my kid to Landon or Prep any day over Gonzaga. Just look at where the IAC schools send their lacrosse players to college. Its night and day. |
Lists, please. |
Didn't Pannell drop out of Cornell last year and request readmission as a 5th year? I think that's what happened, so he could delay graduation and play his last year.
As for high school, what I understand is that he was a very late bloomer. Was going to go to Quinnipiac but became so good he wanted to back out and look at better options. Found a spot on Deerfield Academy's basketball and lacrosse teams as a postgrad and Cornell got him. Late bloomers like him are increasingly hurt by this earlier and earlier recruiting. The schools recruiting the most sophomores/freshman seem to be Duke, UVA, UNC and Hopkins. They are the problem. Ivies can't give a verbal offer to a sophomore or freshman that I know of, and so they will be starting out behind. So far, Cornell has shown the ability to ring a lot out of true student-athletes that may not have the most talent. We'll see if it conitnues. |
Maybe if the elite schools like Duke, Virginia, Penn and Cornell that continue to admit Landon boys would spend more time on DCUM they'd learn not to bring in the Landon kids. But, on the other hand, it's kind of nice when a Landon boy helps you win a National Championship with three goals and two assists. Well done Josh Offutt.

You couldn't highlight the kid's accomplishments without the snark? Liked how he played -- he was one of the big drivers. The real MVP had to be the Duke FOGO, though -- wow, he really turned things around with his face-off dominance. |
