Petworth choices PK3

We are IB for West. However, we consider West to be in our lower tier among the 12 choices. Ideally (like everyone else) we want either dual language or Montessori.
Does anyone have any feedback on Powell, Bruce Monroe, Marie Reed? Same for Lee Montessori or DC Bilingual? I am finding it hard to get to twelve choices as I think most of the better DCPS spots will go to in-bound or those with sibling preference. The HRCS spots also seem like a long shot. Would you rank West lower and still try to aim high or put West and perhaps a Powell high, to increase chances of getting in at least somewhere.

We have our list but not sure if we are shorting ourselves by not putting 12 and also by not putting certain schools higher than others.

Putting West higher on your list only increases your chances comparison to the schools you rank lower.

I would consider West above BM and MR. Have you added Shepherd? What about Cap City, Shining Stars, Bridges, DC Bilingual, Inspired?

OP. Shining Stars, Bridges, DC Bilingual, Inspired, all on list. Did anyone go the DC Bilingual open house on Saturday or know of families with kids there?

Bruce Monroe has historically gone through a lot of its waitlist because of limited space in aftercare. If that is a concern for you, I would check with the school to see if they plan to expand aftercare. Marie Reed is going to be located at MacFarland next year during their renovation, which would probably work well for you. Would the commute work as well when they move back to Adams Morgan? There is a lot of attrition potential at MR because of the move as the parents I have spoken to are not at all happy that they will have to get their kids all the way up to MacFarland or put them on a bus. I have friends with kids at Powell who love it, though they have mentioned that the principal this year was a let down after their previous award-winning principal, so there might be more attrition than usual.

You will almost certainly get into West. I have heard great things from friends whose kids go there, but their kids are young. Shepherd is a very long shot, and also doesn't have the immersion you're looking for.

Missing from your list but potentially viable depending on your commute needs and exact Petworth location:

Bethune (non-common lottery)
Shining Stars (moving next year, may have attrition as a result)
DC Bilingual (ditto for moving + attrition)

You should rank West at the bottom since it works as a safety for you, and put your actual preferences above. If you do it that way, then you're more likely to get in somewhere that you truly want, and someone else can go to West. Not everyone wants either dual language or Montessori.

Not true - rank by true preference. Chances of getting into west only go down if you rank it lower in that if you get a good lottery number, your odds of getting into a higher ranked school are good simply by virtue of having a good lottery number. But if you like those schools better, that is a good outcome.

Others in Petworth, what are your choices?

I'm sure CMI is on your list.

If you are considering Bridges and DC Bilingual, Cap City isn't much farther.

Lots of petworth families at Lee. Ask about Lee on your listserv for specifics. We're there and love it (but we're not in Petworth). There will be more spots at Lee than at other schools because it is opening a classroom and is still small and new and so not eaten up entirely with sibling preferences. Plus the location uncertainty means people are (understandably) gun shy if they have another good option.

Yes. That's what I said.

FYI there are many families that don't prefer language or Montessori (Lee, CMI, Inspired, Capital City, HR non Spanish DCPS)

There is another thread on Bridges. Doesn;t seem like that many people are excited about it. Including some current teachers. The current space is bleak and will be taken over by Breakthrough Montessori. First year school, head of school is not montessori trained and they are not seeking accredidation. West is probably a good option for you.

If you put West higher and get in, everything you ranked below it gets knocked off your list (i.e., you won't have the option to go). If you would rather go to a Montessori school put that at the top. If you put West at the bottom of your list and get in you remain on the waitlist for anything you ranked higher.

Why aren't they seeking to be accredited?
