We are IB for West. However, we consider West to be in our lower tier among the 12 choices. Ideally (like everyone else) we want either dual language or Montessori. Does anyone have any feedback on Powell, Bruce Monroe, Marie Reed? Same for Lee Montessori or DC Bilingual? I am finding it hard to get to twelve choices as I think most of the better DCPS spots will go to in-bound or those with sibling preference. The HRCS spots also seem like a long shot. Would you rank West lower and still try to aim high or put West and perhaps a Powell high, to increase chances of getting in at least somewhere. We have our list but not sure if we are shorting ourselves by not putting 12 and also by not putting certain schools higher than others.
Bruce Monroe has historically gone through a lot of its waitlist because of limited space in aftercare. If that is a concern for you, I would check with the school to see if they plan to expand aftercare. Marie Reed is going to be located at MacFarland next year during their renovation, which would probably work well for you. Would the commute work as well when they move back to Adams Morgan? There is a lot of attrition potential at MR because of the move as the parents I have spoken to are not at all happy that they will have to get their kids all the way up to MacFarland or put them on a bus. I have friends with kids at Powell who love it, though they have mentioned that the principal this year was a let down after their previous award-winning principal, so there might be more attrition than usual. You will almost certainly get into West. I have heard great things from friends whose kids go there, but their kids are young. Shepherd is a very long shot, and also doesn't have the immersion you're looking for. Missing from your list but potentially viable depending on your commute needs and exact Petworth location: Bethune (non-common lottery) Shining Stars (moving next year, may have attrition as a result) DC Bilingual (ditto for moving + attrition)
