DH is taking a work trip to Orlando at the end of April. I will still be on maternity leave, and DS2 will be 10 weeks. DS1 will be 3.5. I know I'll already be stir crazy by then, but am wondering if it would be worth saving what amounts to about $400-600 (DH's flight, one night hotel, two day car rental, and per diem) to take this trip now. We would probably do 3 days at Disney, give or take. I would prefer but not sure we can afford to stay onsite.
FWIW we had thrown out the idea of going this year while DS is old enough to enjoy WDW but young enough to go while school is in session. (I've also been in Orlando in the summer and thought it was as close as you could get to hell without actually dying. ) We nixed that plan once we got pregnant because I am a Fed and have to use leave without pay for at least 20% of my leave. There's a slight chance we could get some family to go on this trip so we'd have help with the baby, but I'm breastfeeding so there's only so much time I can be away from the baby anyway. He's only 2.5 weeks old right now, so no telling if he's going to be an easy baby or not. We have at least managed to get him sleeping in the bassinet for a couple of hours at a time, but would probably just get a king and cosleep on this trip. |
| I think you'll need a nice day trip to a beach. Not to haul two small kids on an airplane and go to the biggest park in the US. This is a terrible idea. |

I adore Disney. Love love love it and I know all the "tricks" and ins and outs. And even though I wanted to go sooner, we didn't take my oldest until she was almost 3 and didn't go back until my two kids were 3.5 and 6.5.
NOW we go annually, but in your shoes I wouldn't do it. Especially not if money is tight right now. It's not somewhere you want to count pennies. |
I would love a beach trip, but think it will be too cool to go to a close by beach in April/early May, which would mean a long drive, right? And I wonder how much we'd really be able to enjoy hanging out on the beach with a 2MO. Appreciate the reality check, though. DS1 is a good traveler (I went to Europe with him by myself at 28 weeks pregnant with no issues, and DH and I would fly together this time), but I really don't know what life is going to be like with 2. I tend to overestimate our abilities and underestimate potential adversity. |
FWIW, if you do decide to stay on site, it can be tough to get a King--you'd probably have to get one of the DVC 1 bedroom villas or a large suite in a deluxe hotel. Most Disney standard resort rooms come with 2 Queen beds. Some rooms will have 1 King bed, but then where would your 3 year old sleep? Even if you are ok with all 4 of you staying in one King size bed (and I totally get that! We co-slept too. ) Disney has strict policies about the number of people staying in one room/number of beds.

| I would - the only problem is if the 3 year old does not want to go on rides alone you'd just have to go on very tame ones. Lots of people bring young kids. They will give you a PNP or crib. If you get two queens, one parent can sleep with the 3 year old, other parent in the other queen. |
Thanks for the warning. We could do two queens, too, and DH could sleep with the 3YO. I guess I haven't considered that the baby might wake up DS1, though he's a pretty heavy sleeper. |
Just run around playing at the beach. You don't have to plan to go swimming in the ocean. I love going to the beach in the off season. No crowds, more comfortable weather-wise to stay there. |
| I actually think Disney would be easier. Baby would be strapped to you and you wouldn't worry about the 3 y/o sprinting into the water. I think hauling 2 kids to the beach is much more work than Disney. |
| We just got back from Disney. What you propose sounds like the 7th level of hell to me. Don't do it. |
|
OP, will you be in the park with or without DH? There is a lot you can do without him--but there is also a lot that your older child may want to do that you cannot do with a small infant. Will he be patient while you stop to feed the baby? Or, will he want to be off and doing?
Frankly, I think the beach sounds more appealing--but it is Spring Break, so there is that........... |
I did this with kids those exact ages and it was a really good trip. We were actually at the beach and were evacuated for a hurricane and spontaneously decided to finish our NC beach week at Disney. We stayed off site in a condo and it was nice to have a washer and dryer, especially because I used cloth diapers at the time. My parents went with us which was a huge help but DH and I would have been fine on our own, too. I wore the baby in an Ergo most of the time and surprisingly, there were quite a few rides I could go on with her in the Ergo. Some (Toy Story Mania for one), I had to take her out. I was also nursing and the baby care centers were wonderful for a quiet, cool place to nurse (though I nursed other places, too). Disney was extremely magical for my older daughter at that age. The younger one slept most of the time and is in the Ergo in most of the pictures but the characters would ask older DD questions about her. I remember one of the fairies saying it was her first season. Happy to help with any specific questions you have since I've BTDT!

| PP here... I am similar to you in that I overestimate our ability and underestimate adversity and it works itself out most of the time. I also think a beach trip sounds like way more work.. all that cooking, hauling stuff, etc. |
| I'd be wary of exposing a kid that young to all the people you encounter on such a trip. I always get sick from air travel-but it's not a big deal for me. But with a 2 month old, it could be. I didn't keep my kids in a bubble, but once we'd passed the 6 month vaccines I felt a lot safer. |
I agree. |
