So I just went to my doctor to get a refill of Vyvanse. I was diagnosed severely ADHD in 6th grade and have been on medication ever since, which has helped a lot.
Anyway, i havent been able to get Vyvanse for a long time, because I was moving and a lot of things were up in the air. I went in today to get a doctor to write a refill and they measured my blood pressure and immediately told me it was quite high. I have always ever been told I have very low blood pressure. So the doctor came in and right away orders an EKG. I get blood drawn and an EKG. They see the result and say, "Lets test your blood pressure again." They did, and this time they said it was normal. I didnt want to argue because Vyvanse is so controlled nowadays that it's like procuring black tar heroin- I was just like, "Ok, cool" cause I wanted my script. They gave it to me and I left and am having it filled but now I'm worried. I've been under an EXTREME amount of stress lately (another reason I didnt take vyvanse over the past few months, because until the situation I was in changed, I could feel it wasnt healthy) and I'm afraid that that may have driven up my blood pressure and now even though I'm out of the situation I have residual high blood pressure. At the same time, I'm worried about my vyvanse. It certainly does make my heart beat faster and I can feel it, but I am severely ADHD, so not taking it means I pretty much accomplish nothing and/or everything takes 50 times as long. Does anyone know what it might mean to have a doctor order an EKG? I know nothing about high blood pressure but like I said I didnt want to ask too many questions. Is it very serious if my vyvanse is causing this? I am only 27 so I dont want to have long term heart issues from my meds. Thanks. |
Trust your doctor. It's very possible you just felt anxious at the beginning of the appointment. My DH's doctor ordered an EKG his first visit just because his heart rate fell outside of the "normal," no further action when nothing unusual was found.
My doc takes blood pressure at beginning and end and it is almost always lower at the end because being "moved through" from waiting room to scale to getting up on the table to temperature to being measured etc is a bit stress inducing. Are you overweight at all? If so, I'd work on that. I'm on Vyvanse and it does put my pulse up in the 90's but it doesn't seem to impact my blood pressure as long as I stay below a certain weight. |
OP are you male or female? How is your cholesterol? |
I am female. They didnt check my cholesterol |
I dont know if I'm overweight but I have gained about 15 pounds over the past 6 months (!!!) due I think to the stress of the situation I was in. Working on losing it now and getting back to my regular weight, cause I have never been this size before. So that very well might have a lot to do with it And yes, I was nervous at the beginning. I forced myself to calm down at the end, but like I said my stress levels have been driven up exponentially by the situation I was in and sometimes I still get panicky, so it wasn't just a one time thing, unfortunately. I have decided to try to be mindful though, and try to calm myself down when I start to worry. Thanks for the advice. This gives me even more incentive to lose this weight. |

Doctors will order EKGs often...they are easy to do and not expensive. So I wouldn't be worried that he ordered one, but rather happy it came back normal. I would do two things- one is Check the Rx label to see if that specific med causes high blood pressure. Two, if you're still worried about blood pressure you can purchase a monitor at cvs and take it at home |
Do you think gaining weight could have something to do with it? I think technically I am not quite "overweight" but I have gained a lot of weight in a very short period of time |
Maybe white coat syndrome? |
My dd just started on a ritalin medicine, and they took an EKG beforehand. That is very common to do an EKG before prescribing an ADHD medicine to make sure everything is ok with your heart before you try it. You could always buy a blood pressure monitor off amazon and test your blood pressure yourself. When my blood pressure started creeping up, that's what my dr told me to do. He said to measure my BP every day in the morning and at night. |
