In-House Counsel - Trade Association

Anonymous
What is a salary range for in-house counsel at a large trade association. Senior level, not GC.

Obviously, it wouldn't be private sector levels, but what could one expect? 220+?

Thanks

$150-$200k salary. Maybe ten percent bonus.

What size trade association? This range for a larger, well-funded association.

Big. 300K+ members, worldwide operations.

Look up their 990 to get a sense of the top salaries and any bonus structure.

It's really too hard to say. My gut says 220K + for a non-GC is probably a reach. I've also seen scenarios where the GC rakes it in and has a cadre of poorly paid staff attorneys, but you say it's senior level, so maybe not.

Benefits can often be very good, so factor that in.

Thanks for the responses. It is a really tough question to answer without a lot of specifics. So perhaps a better way, is to ask about just general guidelines.

For example, it would be reasonable to say that a Deputy General Counsel in a solid for-profit sector could expect to start at roughly 50% to 60% cash comp of the GC (cash comp only, not equity comp, bonuses, etc) and max at maybe 75%. Obviously there are outliers, but as a general guide this is probably not far off.

Is there a similar rule of thumb in the trade association arena?

Eek - sorry that is very high unless you are the GC. DH went to a trade association after 6 years of big law and they offered him 90k+bonus, which he laughed at, and negotiated to 120k + bonus. Not as large as 300k members, but decent size.

I really don't think so. Have you applied for this job yet?

These numbers are way too high, those jobs don't pay that much.

No. I know that the GC makes north of 600k. So I am trying to figure out what is reasonable one step down.

$150k-$200k base salary. Plus maybe a performance bonus and good benefits.

Thanks for the input everyone. I am surprised that it is only 25-30 percent of the GC's comp. Figured it'd be lower than for profit, but not that much.

You can get this info from an ASAP salary survey. It's about $75 for nonmembers.

Also, if the current/prior GC made over $100k, that will be on their 990. Available at guidestar.
