It does but Republicans don’t actually care about the border. Or drugs. Or immigration (except as much as they hate brown people). They literally don’t care about anything, just whatever right wing media tells them to get excited about.

The GOP wants to preserve the representative republic because what distinguishes it from a democracy is the idea that your rights are yours by birth, not by government. Hence you were born with a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Slavery was an abomination because it stripped people of all three of these. Government was the entity enslaving people. In a democracy, what the government gives, the government can later take away. Not ideal. The Constitution limits Federal power for this reason.
