Jesus Freak is perceived as a negative, insulting term towards Christians. If it a thread with a similarly negative slur towards other religions in the title would the thread be allowed to stand? Would you please take a look at this thread's title? It seems like the kind of term that would not stay for long on dcum since it is a slur against a religion or type of religious person. Perhaps the term can be edited out of the title and from the original post? Thank you for taking a look at it. |
Okay, I replaced "Jesus Freaks" with a term that is acceptable to use with regard to other religions.
|
Thanks! I am not of that variety of faith but it bothered me knowing how that term is generally used. |
Jeff, perhaps "devout Christians would be a much more appropriate term than "radical Christian" since OPs discription is that her daughter reads the bible daily and listens to praise and worship music?
She did not say her daughter is running around blowing up abortion clinics and corraling her gay friends into "pray out the gay" summer camps. |
I haven't read the thread and have no idea what the OP's daughter did or didn't do (or even that the thread was about OP's daughter). I was responding to the suggestion that "Jesus Freaks" was insulting and wouldn't be tolerated if applied to another religion. So, I just came up with a term that was a synonym of "Jesus Freak" and was acceptable with regard to other religions. I'll give your suggestion some thought in the morning when I have a clearer mind. |
Different poster, but last fall's Popery thread title was also offensive. |
I actually don't think the title was offensive-
I assumed it was a reference to the DC talk album by that name- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_Freak_(song) This was a major Christian Pop hit in the mid 90's. I could almost recite the lyrics still... |
I have heard Christians using the term to describe themselves. It's not necessarily offensive. |
Oh no. Is DCUM turning PC?
So it's ok to rag on some life choices (SAHM vs. WOHM, BF vs. FF), not not others (religion)?? |
Of course it's offensive to them. |
Yes, or more specifically, no one other than you should ever be offended. That is this site's new mission statement. |
During the 1960's -1970's Jesus Freak was a name for a movement - see Forever Family where in a hippieish fashion people lived in communes [usually old houses in urban areas] - maybe 30 plus people in a row house. Handed out tracts [like Moonies] etc and left mainstream and counterculture [hippie] society. A person I knew joined that movement and they did refer to themselves as Jesus freaks. Those people would be in their sixties or late fifties now. |
Jeff has made it very clear that religious slurs are not welcome on dcum. In today's context, that term is generally used as a slur. The argument you are making in my opinion is similar to the "well that group uses the n-word as a familiar term and in art and music so what is wrong with me using it?" argument. J.F. and its usage has evolve significantly in the past 50 years and not in a good way. |
If you are called a "Jesus Freak"... You can be sure He is preparing a place for you in heaven. |
As discussed else on DCUM, just because a term was not originally offensive does not mean it can't later become offensive. I don't know any 21st century devout Christians who refer to themselves as Jesus freaks. OP clearly didn't mean her DD was a member of the 1960s movement you describe. |
