I know this makes me sound superficial, but...
I run regularly on my treadmill at home. I recently joined a gym, though, because I want to start weight training for my arms. I have a large collection of Nike running shorts, which I love, but...I am the only one wearing them at the gym. All of the other women are wearing yoga pants. Are my running shorts a fashion faux pas, or do they just make me look like I'm trying to dress like a teen? My legs are in great shape, but the shorts are short. I don't do yoga or mat work, just weights at the gym (and my treadmill at home, but my shorts are fine for that). Again, I know this is superficial, but I'd like to know if wearing my Nike running shorts looks ridiculous, or as if I haven't updated my sport wardrobe since college (true, in a way, because I've just been ordering new running shorts for years and years from Nike). |
| No one cares. Just wear what works as long as you're not flashing anyone. I wear shorts for cardio since I would get sweaty otherwise. |
+1 Wear what makes YOU comfortable. People will (or should) focus on their workouts, not what other people are wearing. |
As long as you don't wear Uggs with them, it's fine. |
| As long as there isn't a rule about it, you're fine. The barre studio I go to has a no shorts rule. |
| I saw a woman lifting weights in running shorts at my gym yesterday. She looked like she was in excellent shape and didn't look like she was committing a "faux pas" at all. |
We saw her and whispered about her. Sign Everyone at the gym. |
| I wear shorts at the gym. NBD. |
| Wear what you want! I wear those shorts at the gym. I hate running in yoga pants. |
only because you are jealous. I use to only ever wear shorts before yoga pants/capris became the thing to wear. If I still had nice legs like I did in my younger days I still wear them especial in the summer when it's hot. |
| Uh, it's 18 degrees outside, so no I'm not wearing shorts to or in the gym. But if it turns you on, I'm not going to notice or care. |
| Ha, I wear tight capris because they minimize the pale leg cellulite jiggle on display. It's not a fashion statement. Wear what you prefer to work out in. |

I lift 6 days/week. I'm wearing long tights most days because of the cold weather, but I also wear tight capris sometimes.
If you wear running shorts, I would make sure you wear short sliders (non-padded biker shorts) underneath. Even if you plan to only do upper body, you typically end up leaning over to pick up weights, adjust the bench, get your water bottle, etc and no one wants to see up your shorts (or we will whisper and point at you!) I do wear shorts in the summer to lift, but always have short sliders on as well. I see runners wearing them at my gym right now and HS'ers, but I wouldn't think much of it if you were lifting in them as long as I don't get flashed. |
| OMG! Shorts at the gym are fine! |
| Ick! You're letting your bare legs actually touch the benches and machines? Surely you don't believe that a little swipe with a wipe gets rid of herpes gladiator and resistant staph? I wear yoga pants and hot water wash them. But I wouldn't mind looking at a good pair of legs! |
