2016-17 mcps calendar?

Is next year's school calendar available? I cannot find it on the mcps website. I just want to know when school starts in Aug 2016.

Isnt it usually the Monday before Labor Day?

There is a thread on it here somewhere. Suggested that August 29th (Monday) would be 1st day of school.

Here's the thread but I don't think the calendar has been finalized yet.

We need to make vacation plans now. We are not counting on MCPS to go with August 29 now that they've committed themselves to September 12 as a day of no school. They modified the 2015-2016 calendar in May of last year. I'm making my expensive, non-refundable plans assuming that school will start August 22.

If your child isn't in K, 6, or 9, no worries if they miss the first week.

I do NOT think MCPS would change the calendar so drastically to start 8/22. The earlier start date is hinted at in the 2017-2018 calendar, not 2016-2017. There was no discussion of the earlier start date regarding the 2016-2017 school year.

Yes, the BOE did change this year's calendar in the spring, but it was due to the State of Maryland changing the date of the Maryland primaries. The MCPS altered the timing of a teacher workday to make it fit the spring break schedule a little better.

They did discuss the earlier start in the document attached to the agenda for the BOE meeting. But they ultimately proposed the 29th.

December 8th is when they will decide.

Thanks. I went back and watched the BOE meeting. The earlier start date is due to AP and other testing concerns. The recommendation for waiting until August 2017 for the earlier start date is partly due to having a year without some sort of transition going on. (Basically, this year we have the new bell schedules, so let's have a year off without some sort of change.)

All that being said, MCPS planning staff has to come up with some sort of proposal for the teacher workdays. The 2 options available are to give up one of the first 5 professional days (prior to the school year beginning for students) OR one of the teacher workdays that come after each quarter. Changing any of the latter would require approval from the teachers' union. Any teachers want to comment on this???

Did the BOE support the move to a week earlier for 2017?

The 2017-2018 calendar was discussed minimally. But yes, BOE was fine with an earlier start date, due to testing benefits.

If superintendent and BOE support earlier start is there any chance it won't happen?
