Cooper Middle School New AAP center

Anonymous
Looks as though the school board has been hard at work already and have sent out an email today requesting community "feedback" on the issue of having Cooper become an official center school for next fall. Anyone care to comment (preferably not a bunch of disgruntled Longfellow and Kilmer parents either)...

Did they also send a similar letter to Thoreau?

Seems like a good idea.

I think they shouldn't force it down everyone's throats-it is a badly dilapidated building and adding 300 more students in a year isn't going to do anyone any good-not slated to be renovated for 5 more years.

I support this option. It took my kid about 50mins in the bus to Kilmer one way. With the new center, it'll save lots of commute time. In addition, the teachers' quality at Kilmer is not as good as we expected.

When they have opened new centers in the past, did they seek community feedback or is this specific to this school and community?

I don't know why they don't just announce this and be done with it. They clearly want to do it, there is ample space at Cooper, and dragging out the decision just emboldens those who are convinced a new center can never be as good as an existing center. It's also consistent with the budget recommendations.

I think this meeting is simply a smokescreen to gauge the current level of community support to do it as soon as 2016 or to allow the pain sink in for a year-we will see how many Asian families come out and get riled up!

And PS-don't think for a second Cooper won't need to bring in trailers to pull this off-not to mention it is crumbling apart at the seams in the main building as is...

Oh the horror, trailers! There are already trailers at Longfellow and they have been there for decades. What is your point?

This has been in the planning for years, if this is a surprise to anyone it is because they have been deliberately ignoring it. There is a problem with the bulging 6 th grade, Cooper's capacity is the logical choice. It is a no brainer.

Trailers in FCPS? I'm in shock!

School Board - please give these people a reality check. Most of them voted against you.

Do a search here on the Greenbriar W/Poplar Tree AAP changes; as I recall, FCPS asked for community feedback.

And what was the result of this so called feedback? I think they are merely ticking off boxes and will do whatever they damn well please at the end of the day.

If they were doing "whatever they damn well wanted," they would have introduced AAP at Cooper years ago.
