ECNL forcing Brave & Union Partnership

UHM let's state some true facts please. here is the 2023/4 record for the boys teams...Union gains no advantage with Brave. They dillute their brand if anything and if they are not careful there will lose players who don't want to deal with the mess that this will be. If its true there was pressure to merge due to 'record', ECNL needs to start looking at bottom ranked teams in NC--why for example do 3 clubs have 2 ECNL teams and then play each other. 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom. That's where they should have started the culling not forcing a merger that creates logistical headaches.

Brave 2007 6 wins, 6 losses, 1 draw (ranked 8)
Union 2007 5 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw (ranked 10)

Brave 2008 0 wins 13 losses (ranked 16)
Union 2008 7 wins, 2 losses 4 draws (ranked 5)

Brave 2009 1 win, 11 losses, 1 draw (ranked 16)

Union 2009 4 wins, 7 losses, 2 draws (ranked 10)

Brave 2010 5 wins, 5 losses, 3 draws (ranked 10)
Union 2010 4 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw (ranked 12)

Brave 2011- 2 wins, 11 losses (ranked 14)
Union 2011 3 wins, 10 losses (ranked 12)

Looks like two mediocre clubs. Combination unlikely to create a good club, but it won’t be worse and you’ll have eliminated one doormat.

Let's hope the selection process is merit based and not deep pockets getting their kids buried in the team since the coaches are in their pockets. If I were Brave, I will demand an independent coach to come assess the players at the tryouts and make the selection so its fair. The teams can make their Veo games available as part of the evaluation of each player. Unfortunately, this would not happen and there will still be weak links on the consolidated team (undersize, not fast and physical, technical skills lacking and always getting pushed off the ball).

The stronger players always have do more to compensate for this when they are in the game, like they are playing one or two players down. This creates a situation where the these stronger players are risking getting injured -- ACL, MCL tears. These coaches really need to clean this up.

Under Coach Kevin (Bethesda), this will never happen. The weak ones rarely plays and eventually are replaced.

In a new equal partnership and the new ECNL club it won’t be up to just McLean-Union.

hahaha, I would love to see you tell Nadir or Clyde you want an independent assessment. It's never been fair in these circumstances and it never will be whether you're talking about McLean or anywhere else. The incumbents on the Union teams have the upper hand until it is clear that an outside player is head and shoulders better. That's what sucks about this merger... if you're a mid-pack or lower BRAVE ECNL player, you're in a tough spot. As a parent, it's your job to know how this works and have a plan B at least. Demanding justice will get you nowhere.

Do you know if Nadir or Clyde will be the coaches? What if it’s the Brave or Vienna coaches?

What makes you think Clyde or Nadir are calling the shots here?

I do not know but my guess is the ECNL coaching slate will be based on current Union coaches Nadir, Matt, Brent. This might be the event that causes Clyde to not take a team. Maybe one BRAVE coach sneaks a team, and the rest are helpers.

It's their club. Don't be fooled that this is a merger. It's BRAVE that is losing their ticket.

How can Nadir coach a team if he is at GFR as TD?

I hope that’s the case but my guess is that there is more to the story here.

Nadir contracts services to many clubs simultaneously. Has been doing this for years.

ECNL can't really force clubs to partner or not. That's between the clubs. All they can do is tell a club that they're not competitive enough and withdraw them from competition. Union is plenty competitive across the board, and has a long relationship with ECNL. This merger is motivated by BRAVE losing their ticket, and Union finding themselves with a dwindling player pool. But Union will run this show for the most part.

A great question. I wonder if GFR feels like they're well-served by a TD who has so many "irons in the fire"?

How?

Email went out in February stating rolling offers starting March and existing players would be the priority as their philosophy “is to build from within and supplement from outside”

Offers didn’t go out until late April/May once ID sessions were over. They had to make sure they had everyone from “the outside” they wanted before committing to existing players.

While it’s understood this is part of the process, doing this as late as they did left some without a team to go to.

We didn't get any email about rolling offers or anything.

Email was sent to existing MYS/Union players at the time. But the exact language is still up on the MYS - ECNL ID Session webpage. https://mcleansoccer.org/ecnl/ecnl-idsessions/

I don’t think this model worked well with the Union with SYC.
