How did all of the DC government get seemingly caught with their pants down on this? Usually when new stadiums/arenas and team moves are on the table there’s years of public back and forth. Alexandria/the VA delegation had some incentive to keep it quiet until the last minute but - really, the mayor and council never heard anything from anyone involved until a few days ago???

I'm a Marylander, so I have no stake in this fight, but I have to hand it to Virginia: They're better at business than DC or Maryland.

TBH, DC deserves to lose the Wizards and Caps. Chinatown has become terrifying and between the violent, criminal teens on the loose and the abuse of marijuana in that area, I'm not surprised to see the Wizards and Caps go. It's time for DC leadership to wake up and get to work. The status quo of ignoring problems is not working.

Yes, the money.

But they were also going to have to address the crime issue to keep the team, and the Mayor and Council refuse to do that.

addressing crime would mean admitting how wrong they were in 2020 and acknowledging their own policies created what we have now.

He has been meeting with Bowser and Mendo. He has been expressing concerns re: changes in Chinatown since a press conference in March 2023. There have been several WP articles.

I think Bowser was priortizing football and they did not think they were running out of time and did not prioritize it. They read Leonsis wrong, clearly. And discounted the relationship he has with Younkin and how well VA would work together to bring the opportunity.

+2 Same. It will be terrible for downtown DC. I’m grew up in the area and definitely remember what it was like around Gallery Place before the arena. It is very much one of the major developments that sparked the city’s revitalization.
