Miranda went to private school instead, an option that means she herself didn't have to spend time working with her kids. It's also not an option that most had. This has nothing to do with teachers being babysitters, although ironically many in her APE group did complain very loudly about their lost childcare, read the teachers/school during that time.

But the post was lost on you. It's a legit question to ask how much time a big law firm partner is going to devote to the school board.

This is up there with being one of the most bone headed stupidest posts I have ever seen on this site. And that’s saying something!

Why is is stupid to ask about how much time she has to commit to the Board? It's a really big job.

Yeah. I'm sure she is naively unaware of the time commitment, and woefully unprepared for the role. You have sussed out her deficiency. You should probably tip off ArlNow immediately so they can do an article on your groundbreaking revelation.

I am not concerned about her work life balance, thanks, although she's a relative newcomer to APS involvement so who knows if she understands all that the job entails. I am concerned about how much actual time she will have to devote to the role of Board member. I want a Board member who takes the time to be in our schools regularly, who will engage with all parts of the community (not just her APE constituency), who will attend PTA and committee and community meetings, and who will read all reports, proposed policies, etc. With her job, I don't see how she will have time for all of this, which means that we won't have a very engaged board member.

Why are you fighting this? Don't you want an engaged and active board member too? or are you such a Miranda sycophant that you just don't care?

I said this upthread, but APS SB is a part-time job. Sure it's nice if people can do it full-time, but most can't. It also pays like crap. So that can't be my standard to pick who I vote for.

How many law firm partners do you know with a (demanding) part time job?

I dont remember anyone asking this when Krieger ran? What could be different here? Oh yea she’s a woman. If you pay attn to MT’s advocacy she basically has 3 part time jobs with all her civic duties. As I see in work, if you need something done: ask a busy person.

I am not sure who Steven Krieger is but since he's not running now he's not relevant. You're still deflecting.

I think this is a sign that I am officially a cranky old witch, because the amount of cheese in some of these answers makes me worry about my cholesterol level. "A function of my exceptional youth..." snort.

Haha, was thinking the exact same. His “answers” are such a joke. Upon the question whether he’s ever set foot into any APS school, and if so, which ones, he talks his experience as a student (in another state iirc)… lol. Everyone was a student somewhere at one time, why run *here*? Or his “experience” on SHAB - as PP pointed out, so far, 1 hr of a meeting after he decided to run. Anyone can join SHAB, I was there, too.

How will a skilled professional balance her work and other obligations? The same freaking way she does every day.

Why is it misognynistic? Who else on the board has a job as time consuming as a law firm partner? It's a legit question how much time she will commit to it, especially when she has not committed to any other big time consuming leadership roles in APS, like PTA prez or committee chair.

I am not a Miranda fan, but I'll probably support her. Even if only for the schadenfreude of watching her APE comrades turn on her when they realize the SB really isn't that powerful and Miranda really can't do much to effect change. She will just be a thorn in the side of her colleagues that she alienated during her time with APE. She and her APE crew were extremely critical of the SB during COVID, including the various restrictions placed on SB members open hours during COVID. I think people should hold Miranda to account by attending every single office hour with her, every single meeting, noting when she votes/abstains, etc. Be as critical of her as APE was of the others, but, of course, with much more civility.

+1. I don’t want to vote for Miranda, but she’s the only choice sadly. The other 2 have done less.

What about being president of a school PTA? That is no small job in APS.

According to this thread and whispers elsewhere, Erin was a divisive president. I mean Miranda is divisive too, but I just feel like their platforms are too similar. Might as well vote for Miranda then. At least I know what I’m getting.

Are you sure the rumors about Erin were not planted by her opponent's supporters?

Conspiracy theories everywhere. As we are learning in every contemporary campaign truth is negligible. I don't believe Mirandas or Erin supporters or detractors. The only exposure I have to Erin is watching her at a recent SB meeting. All of Key's parents were begging to have their principal reinstated, and she talked about... learning loss? Good god, she was already running for the board then. And I was already immediately put off by her. Whether Miranda or Erin wins, it's the same candidate with no real gravitas.

Not that I want Angelo either. I'm just hoping an actual qualified Independent runs. Otherwise our kids are so, so screwed.

Do you have a link to Erin's comment to the School Board?

Ask and you shall receive. Sort of. Open Meetings are recorded and are on the APS website too.

FWIW, she didn't sound APEy to me. She was taking APS to task for not supporting students' mental health needs and for buildings not being up to code. I agreed with everything she said.

Someone tell me how "I’ve been in our schools for a range of community events in the past" is a qualification to be on the board?

I went to vote in an APS building one time, so I'm definitely qualified!

I voted in an APS school on Election Day. That counts, right?

Has even lived in Arlington long enough to vote in an election?

John Vihstadt was a member of the Arlington County Board and a partner at a law firm.

Yes and asked the best questions and seem to know how to read a budget and understand capital projects. Perhaps we should recruit more lawyers for these jobs.

I disagree. She sounded APE-y in the video. If you don't agree, you need to read her website then. She might not affiliate with APE, but she's APE.

Also, I agree with the original poster. It is disconcerting that her fellow parents were there to get the principal back but she talked about something else entirely, even if it is legit issues to some. Definitely odd for the ex-PTA president. Do you even go to the school?

Also relinking APS minutes for those who don't want to watch the video. Even APS said she talked about learning loss. Look at all of those Key parents in anger and tears. And ex-PTA president disconnected from them.

I thought the actual APE speaker who came later was the one who sounded disconnected. parents at key are desperate and APE talks about... the need for educational excellence!

Losing their principal was an absolute crisis and as a former PTA president of her community, she could have talked about learning loss at another SB meeting. But okay. It doesn't even matter now. It is a two person race now apparently.

Well that makes things interesting. I truly hope her and her family are okay. Health is no joke and must take priority. Good for her for putting family first. Here’s to our newest school board member: Miranda!
