Mental health professional here. By all means let’s improve access to mental health treatment and decrease stigma. However- that is in no way going to stop this. Mental health practitioners know this. The problem is the guns and there is no “improve mental health”-ing our way out of this and it’s magical thinking to suggest otherwise. |
From what I have read the shooter had a terrible home life with a drug addicted mother and absent father. He was relentlessly bullied for a stutter in middle school and became very angry and violent by high school. He was currently living with his grandmother whose home he had recently moved into and spore fly yesterday he shot her. There are multiple layers here but this kid seemed to have so many warning signs. It’s awful. |
I think there's a choice not to cover them because they seem to cause copy cats. |
Kindness and empathy only work with people who are already had their characters formed into being, at a minimum, civilized. So yes, empathic leadership, female leadership, etc. is great when it comes to companies, organizations, governments. It does not work with young, testosterone, low-average IQ males who need discipline and structure and a pathway to tame their most basic instincts. If it can't be done, they don't belong in our communities. |
Your conveniently forgot that he was living the the USA. Kids with these problems and worse also exist in other countries--countries where school shootings are NOT a regular occurrence. They don't have easy access to assault rifles, body armor, and ammunition. They don't have spineless, self-serving senators whose constituents are contented with their "thoughts and prayers" every single damn time. |

Those doggone people with "mental health" problems.... It has NOTHING to do with easy access to assault weapons!. Nothing at all!

It's weird to me that TX can police miscarrying women but somehow doesn't know who is going to kill 14 post-birth fetuses (ie children) with an assault rifle.

His mom was a drug addict and a crappy parent. He had recently moved in with grandma who owned both her own home and her daughter’s home. She was in the process of evicting her daughter for drug use.
There was a long WaPo story about the family. Total train wreck. |
Agreed. In addition to this, if gun and ammunition manufacturers could be held liable in civil lawsuits, I think that would also go a long way toward alleviating this problem without physically taking people’s guns away from them—which will never ever happen. |
| Grandmother is still alive |
I don't subscribe so I can't read it and I hope this part of the story gets picked up by other outlets. |
This is good news on two fronts, to get insight on the killer's motives and because yesterday they were reporting that she was dead. |
And yet the GOP wants forced births, no expansion of social services, and expansion of gun rights. Please vote these crazies out. |
And yet we did nothing to prevent him from buying multiple guns on his 18th birthday. |
