Star Wars-What order did you show your kids?

Anonymous
DH and I are expecting. With the new Star Wars coming out we are excitedly looking forward to sharing Star Wars with him. We are planning to show him the Machete Order (4,5,2,3,6). But wondering about others experience with Star Wars and kids. How old were they? Did you make it a big deal? What order did you show them? What was their reaction?

We did 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3

We were going to do machete order, but they couldn't handle not going to 6 after 5. The needed to know what happened to Han, etc. plus the new movies suck, so there's that.

Because of an older sibling thing, my youngest was 3.5 when we watched them. Totally inappropriate, but he loved them anyway and wasn't scared at any part.

My husband was really into this. I couldn't "get" what he was talking about. We started with the original movies first. I don't know what machete order means. I was thrilled to see how much they loved them! They are eagerly awaiting the new release.

4, 5, 6. Even I haven't seen all of 1, 2, 3.

Like god intended: 4,5,6. After that, it does not matter, since 1,2, and 3 are garbage.

Also, see previous thread about how questions posted on DCUM seem to be getting dumber and dumber. You are worrying about what order you are seeking input on what order to show the Star Wars movies to your newborn???

Google "Star Wars machete order"
It's an awesome read. Author lays out a brilliant rationale that I will not attempt to summarize here. Seriously, go read it. For those that insist on the quick answer, the "machete order" is
4. A New Hope
5. Empire Strikes Back
2. Attack of the Clones
3. Revenge of the Sith
6. Return of the Jedi

No, I did not accidentally leave out the "first" movie. The "machete order" completely omits the first movie, and does an amazing job explaining why you don't need it.
You are intrigued now, right? Go look it up!
May the Force be with You!

We did 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3

I dreaded watching 1, 2, and 3, but the kids enjoyed them just fine. They thought Jar Jar Binks was hilarious--first time I had any appreciation for that character.

I had to google machete order, but it makes sense to me. We watched IV with DS (4) last weekend.

Starting with I is criminal for so many reasons.

How have I never heard of the machete order before? That is freaking brilliant, and now I really want to watch the movies again in that order.

4, 5, 6 and then 7. 1 2 and 3 do not count

Exactly. Watch them as god intended.

I will say that the one thing that I appreciated about watching 1,2,3 first with the kids was that the technology/graphics/etc was SO BAD……..but the kids LOVED IT. They didn't really notice how outdated/archaic they were, so then when we got to the "newer" movies they were blown away. I think that for them )ages 5, 7 and 8, going backwards 20 years in graphics they may not have been as enthralled by the old movies having seen the new stuff first. Older kids may have appreciated the storyline integrity more, but at my kids ages I think that taking them forward through technology worked better.

*shrug*. I'm so not a star wars fan I pretty much fell asleep through most of them, but the ewok episode kept me awake for sure. I pretty much want an ewok.

I'm the PP who wrote about machete, so I'm glad you liked it! We always have a crowd crossing three generations over the Thanksgiving holiday, and we've all agreed that a marathon viewing of machete order Stars Wars spread out over a few days is a great plan for this year in preparation for The Force Awakens.

For the PPs that are incredulous that this is a topic of discussion... haters gotta hate! Just let us Star Wars nerds geek out and you can just go about your day!

We did just 4, 5, 6 with my oldest (my others aren't old enough for it yet), but now I'm second guessing it. Machete order actually does resolve some of the flaws in the original triology, especially in ROTJ.
