Do you think it's acceptable to put soda into water cups?

We were out for lunch today and it was one of those places where you buy a cup if you want soda etc. and then fill it yourself. At a table near us was a family with young kids where they all had gotten free water cups but had all filled them with soda/punch multiple times. It bothered me that they thought it was OK to essentially steal, and also teach their kids that it's OK to steal. I've seen a lot of people who think they're entitled to things that other people actually pay for. None of the employees said anything to them, and I was wondering why.

Do you think it's acceptable to do this? If so, what's your rationale?

I agree that it's unacceptable.

Of course it's not acceptable. But maybe they paid and gave their kids smaller cups that are easier to handle? Or maybe it's a kid's size with a meal? Just a thought.

Nope. It's clear at this place that the small clear cups are for water only. They're not out at the display. You have to ask for them at the register. No one at the table had a "paid" cup. --OP

No. It's stealing. I was just at a place that had a sign up saying that it's stealing and they will call the police if you do this or bring your own cup and fill it.

Yup stealing. First of all they should be drinking water or milk. Second of all if you want them to have soda but don't want to pay for say 5 sodas you can buy an extra large (biggest size) and get the free cups so everyone can have some. Outright stealing it however is just cheap and unethical.

I hate when I want water and they give me a tiny cup because they are told they have to charge for the bigger cups "meant" for soda.

I don't want to have to get up three times in the middle of my meal to refill my water. Sometimes I explain that to them and they'll just hand me a soda cup for free, but when they won't I ask for three or four water cups. Boston Market is the only place I can think of that we go to where this happens, but I know it's happened other places.

I worked at the concession stand in the movie theater back in college and the cups and other items were inventoried each night. If someone wanted a cup they had to pay for it. If we were short at the end of the night we were written up. The issue is with the corporation or management. The workers are just doing as they are told.

keep a kleen kanteen in your purse. Problem solved. If more people made a habit of just carrying a vessel with them, we'd have a much cleaner planet.

Unethical, but it's just a few cents of flavored syrup. Not outraged.

It was the same when I was working concessions, because that's how they tracked how much soda they sold. Of course this was a-way back in the day when we had registers where you punched in every price by hand. Now you put in the items, not the price, so it seems hard to believe that they would inventory that way any more.

But anyway. I think it's pretty obvious that this is not acceptable, OP, so if you are just looking for people to tsk-tsk along with you.... okay.

I know. That's why I ask for the soda cup but don't push it. I was a cashier once and remember being told if our till was over or under any more than $2, we would get fired.

Same thought here. Sure, it's not cool, but the actual loss to the store is very minimal.
