Girlfriend's mom's death suspicious

Anonymous
Not sure where to post this. My girlfriend and I are DC residents. Her mom suddenly died in Florida at age 50 of what she was told was cardiac arrest. Girlfriend has just flown down there. Mom was married to a retired executive 20 years older. They didn't get along that well lately. The story is she was found dead sprawled on the kitchen floor. Her husband is declining an autopsy and is rushing for cremation. Girlfriend is distraught. "She was healthy as a horse," she says. I'm in DC trying to get her to consult a local Florida attorney to make sure her rights are protected and that process is followed on cause of death. This smells to me. If anyone has any other advice I'd appreciate it.

I saw this on a lifetime movie once. He did it. Had a piece on the side.

Call in an anonymous tip to the local police.

Husband can not decline an autopsy with a sudden, unexpected death like that. Not his call. And boyfriends don't "quote their girlfriends like that" when something horrible has happened to their supposed girlfriend's mother.

Yep. The coroner would be called.

Unfortunately, something very similar just happened with my BIL in Florida. And as long as there is a physician willing to assign a cause of death and sign the certificate, there will be no autopsy. BIL was 48 and found dead on the bathroom floor on a Tuesday afternoon with no evidence of trauma. He was cremated Wednedsay and memorial service was held Thursday at 10am. We ordered a copy of the death certificate with cause of death listed and it was signed by his family practice doc with "cardiac arrest and high blood pressure" as the cause of death. Everyone's heart stops when they die, so cardiac arrest is not a cause of death & millions of 48 year old americans walk around with high blood pressure, so that's not saying much either. But apparently it was good enough for the state of FL!

wat? Just because everyone's heart stops when they die, it does not mean that some people do not dies because their heart stops!

Did he have a family history of early death from heart attack? If so, maybe that history combined with his latest physical was enough for the Family Practice doctor to sign off on?

My dad died at age 48 and didn't have an autopsy. Wasn't Florida though. He was overweight an a heavy drinker so there was probable cause for a heart attack or cirrhosis of the liver etc. Just because someone drops dead in the kitchen (like my dad) doesn't mean they'll automatically have an autopsy.

My uncle died (in Florida). He was older and was experiencing some health issues (due to malpractice). The coroners office would NOT perform an autopsy. My aunt had to arrange for it and pay for it out of pocket. Gross negligence was found (he essentially bled out internally).

This is a real cheery thread. I guess the message is to stay the hell out of Florida if you are over 40?

What happens if you are thin and drop dead in the kitchen? You get to have an autopsy? Woohoo! Party time! Uh...wait a minute!

Florida is know for some of the most lax medical licensing requirements in the country. There are an insane number of quacks that practice medicine there who have been kicked out of other states. Nobody goes to Florida for their fine medical care.

Has your girlfriend been in touch with the police and said that she thinks this could be suspicious? And can they help to delay the cremation? It seems to me that would be a good thing to do at this stage.

Yeah, because the best docs prefer the congestion suburban sprawl of the DC area? That makes sense to you? O.k.!
