"Love my wife but she's getting fat" thread

Anonymous
This thread seems overrun with one or a few hateful, misogynist trolls.

I read through that thread and removed a few posts, but I felt like most of the inappropriate posts were from women calling the OP names.

Oh Jeff.... why am I not surprised. You sure do allow a lot of misogyny on here.

I'm a woman, and I agree.

Same here. I thought OP's post seemed very genuine and his questions were fair.

Yes, that's true. That's the secret to maintaining a forum dominated by women for 8 years and running.

I think that has more to do with timing and opportunity and not any kind of pro-woman advocacy on your part. I haven't seen any.

Yes, again, you are absolutely correct. I couldn't have said it better myself. If you time something correctly, women just eat up the misogyny. As you seem to believe, women have so little self-respect that they will spend hours a day on a site devoted to humiliating them. All because the timing was correct.

Oh gosh Jeff... I would love for you to point out where I said that.

The point is, whether the site is dedicated to "humiliating" them (as you so melodramatically put it) or not, you have allowed misogyny to happen numerous times on the site without saying or doing anything to stop it.

Yes, I'm a big Jeff fan, but he does seem to have a higher tolerance (or bigger blind spot) for misogynist/MRA trolls than for the racist ones.

Have you reported those posts? Do you have any evidence that I even know about those posts? If I don't know about them, have I really "allowed" them or is that sort of like a tree falling in the forest with nobody hearing it?

Let's accept that there is some misogyny here. So what? Just about everyone will be offended by something here. Do you really want a website that is offense free? What would be discussed? Puppies, ice cream, and motherhood? Well no, puppies defecate in people's yards, are the source of allergies, and frequently come from puppy mills. Obviously puppies are an offensive topic. Ice cream -- do I need to say more? Just look at the thread that provoked this one. Offensive topic. So, motherhood? I guess we could have a site about motherhood. As long as we didn't discuss breastfeeding, staying at home vs working, etc.

Stop with the victim-y straw-man posts.

It seems pretty clear to me that disagreement can exist on a website without discrimination and hatred.

Just like you seem aware of the unacceptability of racist posts, you should be aware of how unacceptable sexist posts are. I don't know who in the world, save maybe an MRA or PUA, would think reducing misogyny would necessarily make a website "boring."

But you know... "Let's accept that there is some misogyny here. So what?" That pretty much says it all, huh?

That is probably because the MRA (a term I just learned in the last few weeks) trolls are in the relationship forum. I would rather have dental surgery than read the relationship forum (though Maria tells me I could learn a lot). The racist posts tend to be in the political forum which is the forum I read the most. I know I sound like a broken record, but you have to use the "report" button. That's what it is there for.

Yes, it says it all. There is also racism, classism, and all other kinds of prejudice displayed here. Do you only want one category of offensive posts eliminated? That seems a bit "victim-y" to me.

Sure, I'm fine with all forms of discrimination being outlawed here, misogyny, racism- I have no issues with that.

And Jeff- don't play dumb. You have slapped down plenty of racist posts, and then you act like, "Huh? You're asking too much from me!" When we tell you you're not doing enough about sexism. It's definitely... suspect.
