Why Bethesda always, not Chevy Chase?

Anonymous
Making our 3rd trip to the area in prep of buying in the Spring and still struggling a bit with areas.

It seems like there are tons of posts about Bethesda, but very few about Chevy Chase (Beth vs North Arl, Beth vs SS, etc)? Aren't CC and Bethesda quite similar? I know there is Bethesda Row and Friendship Heights, but I would think there would be more about CC since it shares a well-regarded school with part of Bethesda. Is it just implied that CC is part of Bethesda? Or maybe it actually is?

Not working with a realtor yet, and actively trying to avoid those at open-houses.

Bethesda and CC are similar -- and then there is also the distinction of CC DC and CC MoCo.

Chevy Chase tends to be slightly more expensive and out of reach for more families. Both are great.

^^That should say CC MoCo is more expensive.

Many people avoid CC DC because of all the problems that come with living in DC (mostly school issues).

Chevy Chase is NOT part of Bethesda.

Shudder.

The very nicest parts of Chevy Chase, MoCo, are small, beautiful streets, lots of sidewalks, some are walking distance to Friendship Heights or downtown Bethesda/Bethesda Metro, and they have quite expensive real estate. They include Town of Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase Village, Somerset, Chevy Chase Section 3, Chevy Chase Section 5, Martin's Addition. I think Bethesda is more sprawling and also that there are more areas with homes at a slightly more reasonable price for first time home buyers who are moving for the schools, etc. I think most people who are looking in Chevy Chase already know what they are looking for and may not have as many questions? But if you are new and looking in the area, and the price point is right, there are many similarities.

Also Kenwood.

Bethesda has a small town feel in its downtown. The downtown is distinctly urban. Chevy Chase, MoCo, is clearly a suburban area (some of it gorgeous) with a tiny rendez-vous point of stores. Not the same thing at all. Also, suburban Bethesda is quite large, unlike Chevy Chase.

We chose to live near downtown Bethesda since we wanted that walkable-to-everything urban feel next to our SFH.

Bethesda is much larger.

I think that BCC is not considered the strongest school. People who can afford CC can (and IME do) afford private school.

Yes, Bethesda is much larger and more diverse in terms of housing stock/neighborhood styles/pricing.

I think people also just use "Bethesda" as shorthand when they really mean to refer to "that part of Md west of Silver Spring and south of Rockville"

Thank you! That was all very helpful.

BCC is not the preferred school district in West MoCo

I never understand why some people who should know better think that Somerset and kenwood and kenwood forest are "Chevy Chase". Chevy Chase ends at Wisconsin and always has. Since 1920ish.

Is it because it's 20815?

But that def, glover park is Georgetown. And so on.
